Cardinals Splits Close Games

April 21, 2001

Battle Creek, MI – At the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) versus the Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) tournament the SVSU softball team split two close games. After a rain delay the Cardinals faced GLVC number one seed, Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville. Sophmore pitcher, Courtney Pintek (Flushing ) remained composed on the mound as she pitched a five hitter. Despite exceeding the team's expectations, Pintek's effort was not enough, as at the bottom on the seventh inning the Courgars were able to score the only and winning run on a suicide squeeze.

In the second game of the day, senior pitcher Carrie Shay (Flint/Burton Bendle) got some needed help from the offense to defeat the Oilers of Finley University. Despite being down one run, SVSU rallied in the fifth inning to score the two runs that were needed to take control of the game. After a double steal from freshman, Jesse Kaniszewski (Kingston) and sophomore, Kelly Martin (Bay City/All Saints) put runners at second and third, junior Becky Bourcier (Montrose) was able to knock in both runners with a double to win the game 2-1.

After today's games, Saginaw Valley is 10-8 overall and 3-9 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals return to Battle Creek on Sunday April 22nd, for the second half of the GLVC vs GLIAC tournament.
