Cardinals Split with Ashland

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team split its double-header with Ashland University today (Apr. 11), by scores of 2-1 and 5-6.

GAME ONE
The Cardinals would get the offense going in the fourth inning when Ashley Jordan (Freeland, Mich.) reached on a one out walk. She would come in to score later in the inning on a Jillian Peterson (Freeland, Mich.) single up the middle to give Saginaw Valley a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Nicole Fick (Columbiaville, Mich./Lapeer West) blasted her first homerun of the season to left center to put SVSU up 2-0.

The Eagles would try and mount a comeback in the top of the seventh, but starting pitcher Jade Fulton (Byron, Mich.) would strike out two batters to end the game after Ashland led off the inning with a homerun. Fulton allowed one run on three hits while striking out seven batters on the afternoon as she picked up win number 13 on the season.

GAME TWO
In game two a slew of errors found the Cardinals down 5-0 going into the fourth inning. Marsha Beaubien (Alpena, Mich.) would cut into that lead with a solo homerun in the top of the fourth.

The Cardinals would strike with three more runs in the in the top of the fifth inning. Beaubien would double off the right center wall to score Angela Kaiser (Waterford, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes HS) and Billi Hoeppner (Hemlock, Mich.). Beaubien would then steal third and score on an overthrow by the catcher to cut the Eagles lead to 5-4.

Peterson would drive in the game tying run in the top of the sixth with a single through the right side that score pinch runner Jessica McKeith (River Rouge, Mich.) to knot the score at 5-5.

Ashland would add a run in the bottom of the sixth go back on top 6-5. The Eagles would set the Cardinals down in order in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

Stacy Kraatz (Howell, Mich./Hartland HS) took the loss for the Cardinals, throwing five and two thirds of an inning, allowing six runs (1 earned) on seven hits.

With the split the Cardinal are 27-7 overall on the season and 14-2 in the GLIAC, while Ashland moves to 23-8 overall on the season and 11-3 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will return to action on Tuesday (Apr. 14) when the host Northwood University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
