| Women Perform Well at Holiday Classic |
| UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University mens and womens track teams had a solid performance at their annual Holiday Classic on Friday (Dec. 5). For the women, senior Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.) took first place in the pentathlon with a total of 3133 and second in the shot put with a distance of 12.04 meters. She also finished second in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.21, however did not compete in the finals. Junior Kendra Brown (Clare, Mich.) finished second in the pentathlon with 2585. Junior Emily Nugent (Benzonia, Mich./Benzie Central) finished first in the shot put with a distance of 12.98meters and second in the weight throw with a distance of 15.41 meters. Freshman Stacy Stremlow (Coleman, Mich.) took fourth with 12.57 meters while sophomore Stacy Westphal (Corunna, Mich.) placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of 2.90 meters. Freshman Samantha Roberts (Bullock Creek, Mich.) took fourth place in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.41. Junior Amber Catlin (Alma, Mich.) finished first place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 19:02.19 while senior Elayna Dush (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) and junior Libby Robinson (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley HS) finished third and fourth place respectfully. Freshman Ashley Meyer (Shepherd, Mich.) took first place in the one mile run with a time of 5:36.45. Freshman Angela Brooks (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS) finished fourth with a time of 1:01.28 in the 400 meter run. Senior Sjonne Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich./Troy HS) finished second place with a time of 26.63 while senior Ashley morrow (Millington, Mich.) finished fourth with a time of 27.38. Saginaw Valley nearly swept the top four places of the 3000 meter run. Freshman Chelsea Savage (Monroe, Mich.) took first place with a time of 10:57.01, junior Rachel Trombley (Reese, Mich.) took second with 11:00.25 and junior Amanda Roache(Clio, Mich.) finished fourth with a time of 11:14.57. The relay team of Sjonne Mitchell, Sarah Kawiecki, Ashley morrow and Angela Brooks finished second in the 4x400 meter relay with a final time of 4:03.60, just .05 seconds from first place. On the men’s side, senior Kyle McDaniel (Yale, Mich.) took first place in the pentathlon with a total of 3131, while junior Ryan Jayne (East Lansing, Mich.) took second for the Cardinals with 3024. Sophomore Trevor Opalewski (St. Clair Shores, Mich./South Lake) placed third in the long jump with a distance of 6.27 meters. Senior Sean Egan () had a great showing in the shot put taking first with a distance of 16.22 meters. Junior Josh Koglin (Kimball, Mich./Marysville) finished third 48m in the shot put with a distance of 14.48 meters. He also took second in the weight throw with a distance of 17.02 meters. Junior Scott Chevalier (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) had a solid performance on the day finishing first in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.87 seconds while freshman Ronald Spears (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan HS) and sophomore Dennis Jackson (Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica Henry Ford II) finished third and fourth place respectfully. Senior Len Weddel (East Tawas, Mich./Tawas Area) took the third place in the 3000 meter run with a time of 9:17.02. The relay team of Sam Tilmon (Romulus, Mich.), Charlie Richards (Goodrich, Mich.), jAnthony Filipek (Caro, Mich./Kingston) and Josh Arnold (Clio, Mich.) led Saginaw Valley to a first place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:27.40. Tilmon also finished in first place in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.45. Juniors Jesse Evans (Cheboygan, Mich.), Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East) and Steve Genther (Laingsburg, Mich.) finished in second, third and fourth place in the 5000 meter run. The men’s and women’s track teams are back in action on January 9 in Allendale, Mich. at the Grand Valley State Invitational. |
