Men Take Home Fourth at the GLIAC Championships

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University Men’s track team had a great showing at the GLIAC Indoor Championships this weekend as they ran out to a fourth place finish and had another national provisional qualifier performance.

Sophomore Tony Filipek (Caro, Mich./Kingston) had a fourth place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.49.

In the long-distance running, junior Len Weddel (East Tawas, Mich./Tawas Area) brought home a sixth place finish in the mile run, with a time of 4:19.98, and senior Nick Krus (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) collected a fourth place finish in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:39.50. Krus also had a great showing in the 5000 meter run, finishing fourth after a time of 14:53.77. He was followed closely behind by senior Adam Roach (Port Huron, Mich.) who placed sixth in a time of 15:03.02.

Junior Sam Tilmon (Romulus, Mich.) took home a third place finish in the 55 meter hurdles after a time of 7.78 seconds, just missing the provisional qualifying time of 7.71 seconds. Sophomore Brock Humphries (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) also placed in the 55 meter hurdles as he came home seventh, in 8.06 seconds.

In the long jump, freshman Sean Urbin (Macomb, Mich./Henry Ford II) and sophomore Mark Badowsky (Lincoln Park, Mich.) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, each finishing with a distance of 22 feet 0.25 inches. Urbin also had a great showing in the triple jump, finishing sixth at a distance of 43 feet 0.50 inches. Badowsky finished ninth in the event, at 41 feet 6 inches.

Junior Ryan Simmons (Port Austin, Mich./Kinde-North Huron) placed fourth in the high jump at a height of 6 feet 4 inches, while freshman Justen Johnson (Lapeer, Mich./West) and junior Kyle McDaniel (Yale, Mich.) both took home top ten finishes in the high jump as well, at 6 feet 4 inches and 6 feet 2 inches, respectively. McDaniel also took home an eighth place finish in the pole vault, with a height of 14 feet 7.25 inches.

In the shotput, junior Sean Egan (Marysville, Mich.) took home a third place finish and an NCAA Division II Provisional qualifying distance with a throw of 52 feet 6 inches. Freshman Josh Koglin (Kimball, Mich./Marysville) took home a ninth place finish in the event with a throw of 49 feet 9.75 inches.

Grand Valley State University won the GLIAC Championship with a meet total of 199.66 points, while Ashland (147 points), Hillsdale (91 points), Saginaw Valley (55.33 points), and Northwood (49 points) rounded out the top five.

Saginaw Valley State’s national qualifiers will be in action on March 14th and 15h in Mankato, Minnesota, when they travel to the NCAA Division II Indoor Nationals.
