| Women Place Sixth at GLIAC Championships |
| FINDLAY, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women’s track team took home sixth at the GLIAC Championships this weekend in Findlay, Ohio, as the usual suspects for the Cardinals again came up big for the team with a couple high finishes. Junior Sjonne Mitchell (Clarkston, Mich./Troy) placed sixth in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.40 seconds and she followed that up with a seventh place finish in the 200 meter dash at a time of 26.10 seconds. Senior Courtney Kotewa (Essexville, Mich./Garber) took home a third place finish in the 800 meter run with a NCAA Division II Provisional qualifying time of 2:16.00. In the 3000 meter run, senior Becca Rudey (Wixom, Mich./Walled Lake Western) placed third as well, with a time of 10:15.05. The highest finish in the competition for the women came from sophomore Maggie Stalker (Oscoda, Mich.) who came in second in the 5000 meter run with a NCAA Division II Provisional qualifying time of 17:49.14. Senior Leighann Dowell (Millington, Mich.) continued her spectacular season with a fourth place finish in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.41 seconds, just .01 off of a provisional qualifying time. She followed that up with an eighth place finish in the long jump at a distance of 17 feet, and then placed seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 34 feet 2 inches. To go along with those accolades, she also collected an eighth place finish in the shot put with a distance of 40 feet 4.75 inches. Junior Christina Ferguson (Athens, Ont./Thousand Islands) also took home a top ten in the triple jump, with a distance of 33 feet 5.75 inches. Senior Kali Briggs (Jackson, Mich./Vandercook Lake) took home a third place finish in the high jump at a height of 5 feet 3.25 inches, while senior Heather Schmitz (Brighton, Mich/Brighton) placed ninth in the pole vault at a height of 10 feet 1.50 inches. Freshman Emily Nugent (Benzonia, Mich./Benzie Central) took home a 10th in the shot put at a distance of 40 feet 0.75 inches, and a 13th place finish in the weight throw with a distance of 46 feet 9.50 inches. Grand Valley State won the GLIAC Championship for the women with a point total of 188.50 points, while Ashland (107 points), Findlay (102 points), Hillsdale (71 points), and Ferris State (53 points) rounded out the top five. Saginaw Valley State University ended the competition with 43.50 points. For the lucky few Cardinals who qualified for nationals, they will be in action on March 14th and 15th in the NCAA Division II Indoor Nationals at Mankato, Minnesota. |
