Men Take First, Women Second at Northwood Open

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Northwood University Open on Friday (September 5).
In the men’s competition SVSU ran away with meet honors with 22 points, with Northwood (72), Ferris State (73), Alma (84), and Mott Community College (114) rounding out the five-team race. The women’s competition saw Ferris State run away with first place with 17 points, with SVSU (54), Alma (64), and Mott Community College (112) rounding out the scoring.
     Northwood’s Jon Hodge took top honors in the men’s 8k race with a time of 25:58.10, while SVSU claimed the next four places. Junior Jerome Recker (Kimball, Mich./Port Huron HS) took second (26:06.70), sophomore Adam Roach (Port Huron, Mich.) took third (26:15.40), senior Pedro Ortega (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley HS) took fourth (26:19.90), and freshman Greg Schmit (Leslie, Mich.) took fifth (26:43.70). Freshman James Gale (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill HS) took eighth place with a time of 26:56.30 to round out the Cardinal scoring contingent.
     Three Ferris State runners topped the women’s competition, with Rachel Cox (19:49.30) taking first, Jenny Irwin (19:51.10) taking second, and Julia Viel (19:57.10) taking third. SVSU junior Meagan Strohkirch (Gladwin, Mich.) finished fourth (20:04.10), senior Heather Kersjes (Corunna, Mich.) took eighth (20:34.10), and Mandie Gallier took ninth (20:45.10).
     The Cardinal harriers have a two-week layoff before a September 19 meet at Michigan State University (East Lansing, Mich.). The women are set to run at 2:00p.m., while the men's race is scheduled to start at 2:35p.m.
