Cardinal Men Take First at Ferris Invite

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Ferris State Invitational on Friday (September 26). The men came home with first place honors, while the women fifth out of seven entries. The men ran an 8k race, while the women competed in a 5k race.
     Sophomore Adam Roach (Port Huron, Mich.) brought home individual first-place honors, besting the rest of the field by more than nine seconds with a time of 27:00.40, while teammates Pedro Ortega (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley HS), Jerome Recker (Kimball, Mich./Port Huron HS), and Greg Schmit (Leslie, Mich.) provided the Cardinals’ other top-15 finishes. Ortega finished in fifth with a time of 27:23.60, Recker took eleventh in 27:39.50, and Schmit finished in 27:56.70 to take 13th place.
     The Cardinal women received top-15 finishes from junior Meagan Strohkirch (Gladwin, Mich.) and senior Heather Kersjes (Corunna, Mich.). Strohkirch took sixth place overall with a time of 19:34.30, while Kersjes finished in 13th place with a time of 19:49.90.
     The Cardinals return to action on Saturday (October 4) at the Loyola Lakeshore Invitational. The women’s race is set to begin at 10:15a.m., while the men’s start is scheduled for 11:10a.m.
