GUERRERO AND GALLIER SHINE AT "GINA" RELAYS

HILLSDALE, Mich. - Senior Mario Guerrero (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) and senior Mandie Gallier (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) each had big meets at the "Gina" Relays on Friday and Saturday. Guerrero participated in the decathlon for the first time and managed to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with 6,561 points. He has the 11th-best point total among Division II athletes and won the event by more than four hundred points. Gallier finished in the top 10 in three events including a first place finish in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.11. In addition, she was sixth in the 400 dash (57.82) and ninth in the 100 hurdles (14.87).
     In other action on the women's side, Ashley Bishop (Pickford, Mich.) finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 42-6.75, 16th in the discus (130-0) and 24th in the hammer throw (143-2). Freshman Kali Briggs (Jackson, Mich./Vandercook Lake) finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 116-2. Diane Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich.) placed 11th in the 3000 meters with a time of 11:12.61. The 4x400 relay finished fifth with a time of 3:59.24.
     Freshman Eltaro Hooper (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) and freshman Jerry Nelson (Taylor, Mich./Truman) each had good meets as Hooper placed third in the high jump (6-8) and fourth in the triple jump (45-6.5). Nelson was fourth in the 100 dash (10.9) and 10th in the 200 dash (22.49). Chris Baranek (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) was third in the 400 dash with a time of 48.74. Pedro Ortega (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) placed fifth in the 3000 steeplechase (9:13.21). The 4x100 and 4x400 relays both finished second as the 4x100 finished in a time of 41.87 and the 4x400 came in at 3:18.90.
