Men Take 1st, Women 2nd at Ferris
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University track
and field squad traveled to Ferris State University on Saturday
(April 26) to compete in the U.S. Track Coaches Association Invitational.
The Cardinal men took home first place honors, tallying 248 points
to trump host FSU (141), Aquinas College (123), and Lake Superior
State (69). The lady Cardinals tallied 157.5 points, second only
to FSU (234.5), while Aquinas (123) and LSSU (69) rounded out the
scoring.
The men received individual first-place
efforts from freshman Chris Baranek (Kawkawlin,
Mich./Bay City Western HS), freshman Adam Roach
(Port Huron, Mich.), junior Bill Germain
(Vassar, Mich.), senior James Gardner
(Saginaw, Mich./St. Charles HS), senior Jason Andrich
(Marlette, Mich.), senior Josh Harris (Clare,
Mich.), and junior Rob Samborn (Auburn,
Mich./Bay City Western HS). Baranek won the 100 meter dash
(10.77), Roach ran away with the 1500 meter run (4:06.20), Germain
took first in the 110 meter hurdles (15.89), Gardner took the triple
jump (38’ 11.5”), Andrich won the shot put (50’
0.5”), Harris took hammer throw honors (157’ 2”),
and Samborn threw his way to first in the javelin (157’ 2”).
The Cardinals also took first place in the 4x100 meter relay (42.24).
The Cardinals rounded out their scoring output with eight second-place
showings, eight thirds, six fourths, two fifths, one sixth, four
sevenths, and one eighth place showing.
The lady Cardinals got first place
efforts from senior Leah Burns (Capac, Mich.),
senior Nicole Sullivan (Vassar, Mich.),
freshman Ashley Bishop (Pickford, Mich.),
sophomore Nikki Charbonneau (Macomb, Mich./L’Anse
Creuse HS). Burns vaulted her way to first place in the pole
vault (11’ 0”), while Sullivan took first in both the
long jump (18’ 10.5”) and triple jump (36’ 8.75”).
Bishop earned top honors in both the shot put (41’ 5”)
and hammer throw (145’ 7”), while Charbonneau took first
place in the javelin throw (98’ 6”). The lady Cardinals
also fashioned five second-place finishes, two thirds, one fourth,
two fifths, and two sixth-place showings to round out their scoring
output.
The Cardinals return to action on
Friday and Saturday (May 2 & 3) as they host the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Championships. The
meet is scheduled for a 3:00p.m. start on Friday, while day two
gets underway at 11:00a.m.
