CARDINALS WIN THREE-TEAM INVITATIONAL HOSTED BY ST. JOSEPH’S COLLEGE

RENSSELAER, Ind. – Head Coach Jim Nesbitt and his Saginaw Valley State Cardinals opened the outdoor portion of their 2003-04 season with a pair of first-place team finishes out of a three-team field at the Gene and Rose Edmonds Invitational hosted by St. Joseph’s College. The women’s squad scored 135 points and defeated second-place Ferris State by 15 points. Host school St. Joseph’s finished with 109 points.
    The meet was highlighted by Mandie Gallier (Midland, Mich.), who broke the school record in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:01.50 broke the previous mark set by Helena Jach in 2002. She also set a meet record in the process and is a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. In addition, Gallier became a provision qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.64, which qualified by one one-hundredths of a second.
    Mary Jo Pouillon (Owosso, Mich.) won the shot put with a throw of 43.57’ which also was a provisional mark. Ashley Bishop (Pickford, Mich.) won the hammer throw with a distance of 159.78’ and also qualified on a provisional basis for nationals. In other field events, Nikki Charbonneau (Macomb, Mich./L’Anse Creuse North) won the javelin throw with a distance of 115.06’.
    On the men’s side, SVSU won the meet with 184 points followed by St. Joseph’s with 130 points and Ferris State with 75 points. Mario Guerrero (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) won the long jump with a distance of 22’ 8.5”. Senior Jason Andrich (Marlette, Mich.) threw the shot 46’ in winning the event. The men’s 4x100 relay team set a meet record with a time of 42.46 in winning the event. Max Masters (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) won the 110-meter hurdles at 15.33. Lewis Gordon (Lansing, Mich./Everett) set a meet record in the 400-meter dash at 48.55.
