CARDS HAVE GOOD DAY AT GLIAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

HILLSDALE, MICH. – Saginaw Valley State University's mens and womens track and field teams had some fine showings at the GLIAC Championships on Friday (May 7). The men finished in third place while the women finished fifth. At the conclusion of the meet Saginaw Valley's coach Jim Nesbitt was awarded the GLIAC Men's Coach of the Year.
       For the women Mandie Gallier (Midland, Mich.) continued her dominace in the hurdles, as she took home first place in the 100 meter hurdles (14.55) and the 400 meter hurdles (58.64). Her time in the 400 meter hurdles broke the previous GLIAC Championships record of 1:01.85. Mary Jo Pouillon (Owosso, Mich.) picked up a first place also, in the shot put, as she had a meet best throw of of 44-05.25’’. Jen Brogger (Harbor Springs, Mich./Harbor Springs HS) won a gold in the javelin, as she threw it 139-06.00''.
        On the men’s side Mario Guerrero (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) was a double winner, capturing victories in the high jump (6-09.75'')and long jump (23-0.00''). Other first place finishers were the 4X400 meter relay team, consisting of Kenneth Williams (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln HS), Justin Thomason (Port Huron, Mich), Chris Baranek (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western HS), and Lewis Gordon (Lansing, Mich./Everett HS) as they posted a winning time of 3:12.76. Gordon also picked up a second place in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 47.88. Pedro Ortega (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley HS) and Jerome Recker (Port Huron, Mich) controlled the 3000 meter steeplechase, as Ortega took first (9:25.98) and Recker took second (9:43.17). James Gale (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) took home a silver medal in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 32:08.61.
