Cardinals
Return From Ohio With Two Overtime Wins
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University
men’s soccer team returned to campus with two overtime wins
this weekend. Saturday saw the Cardinals defeat Ashland 3-2, while
Sunday brought a 2-1 victory over Findlay. The two games marked
the end of the season for the Cardinals.
On Saturday, the Cardinals had a rough
start as Ashland's Dylan Cowdery scored only 23 seconds into the
game to give the Eagles the early lead. However, SVSU senior Claudio
Cicchetti (Ancaster, Ontario/St. Thomas Moore)
tied it up at the 6:18 mark with an unassisted one-on-one goal.
The game was scoreless for roughly 38 minutes before Ashland's Dan
Slater ended the first half scoring on an assist from Mike Zakany.
The Cardinals played from behind for almost 43 minutes in the second
half until senior Jeremy Ignace (Grand Blanc,
Mich.) tied the game from about five yards out on an assist
from senior Stephen Walker (Manchester, England/Philips).
The last two minutes were scoreless, leading the teams into overtime.
Only 3:35 into the extra session, SVSU's Kyle Grant (Milton,
Ontario/Bishop Reding) scored his third game-winning goal in
the Cardinals' last five games. The goal came on an assist from
junior Cale Wassermann (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham
Groves). Senior goalkeeper Grant Pierce (Franklin,
Tenn./Centennial) went the distance in net to earn the victory.
Sunday's game with the Findlay Oilers
had a much different pace, as neither team scored for the first
75 plus minutes. Findlay struck first with a goal off the foot of
Jacob Schram and assisted by Ryan Smith at the 76:04 mark. At the
79:42 mark, SVSU's Stephen Walker scored on a penalty kick to tie
the game at 1-1. That score would hold for the remainder of regulation.
The overtime period lasted only 4:41, as Cale Wassermann scored
the game winner for the Cardinals off an assist from Ryan
Norman (Linden, Mich.). Grant Pierce once again
went the distance in net to earn the victory for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals finish the season with
a record of 6-5-2 (2-2-1).
