Cardinals Win Twice to Begin Season

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s soccer team opened the 2003 season with a successful road trip over the Labor Day weekend. SVSU got off on the right foot with a 2-0 victory over Bellarmine University on Saturday (August 30). The Cardinals came back on Sunday (August 31) with another 2-0 victory, this time over host Northern Kentucky. Both games were played on the home field of Northern Kentucky University.
     Against Bellarmine, the Cardinals were led by senior goaltender Adrian Thomas (Marval, Trinidad & Tobago/Queens Royal HS). Thomas went the distance in goal, recording nine saves in the shutout victory. Sophomore midfielder Cale Wassermann (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves HS) scored the Cardinals’ first goal of the season in the tenth minute on an assist from junior forward Kyle Grant (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding HS). Freshman midfielder Ryan Norman (Linden, Mich.) added an insurance goal in the 75th minute on another assist from Grant.
     Thomas recorded another shutout against Northern Kentucky, this time denying all eight shots fired on goal. Grant scored in the 85th minute on an assist from junior midfielder Josh Mosser (Haslett, Mich.) to get the scoring started. Sophomore Robert Alexander (Midland, Mich.) closed out the scoring in the 90th minute off an assist from senior forward Jeremy Ignace (Grand Blanc, Mich.).
     The two victories move the Cardinals to 2-0 on the season. SVSU returns to the field on Saturday (September 6) against Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia. The contest is set to begin at 7:00p.m.
