The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team won their last game of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating top ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside by the score of 1-0.
The score at halftime was 0-0, but during the second half sophomore Omar Pompey (Toronto, Ont./C.W. Jefferies) scored the only goal of the game off an assist from junior David Patterson (Roscommon).
Freshman Todd Perry (Lapeer West) was in the goal for the Cardinals, facing 14 shots and making 8 saves. Wisconsin-Parkside had 14 shots on goal and Saginaw Valley State had 10 shots on goal.
"My team played the best game of the season today," commented head coach Reza Saffarian. "My players saved the best for last. They played their best for the last game of the season. Today the spirit was up and we were able to get over the hump and win the game." The Cardinals end the season with a record of 5-12 overall and 0-6 in the GLIAC.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team lost an overtime decision to St. Joseph's College Saturday afternnon, by the score of 4-3.
The score at halftime was 0-0, but during the second half it was a back and forth battle. St. Joseph scored the first goal in the second half at 47:00 minutes. The Cardinals came back and scored at 52:00 minutes to tie the game with a goal by junior Roberto Guzman (Belize) with an assist from junior Isiah Jaime (Saginaw/ Heritage).
St. Joseph would take the lead again at 57:00 minutes, but 2 minutes latter SVSU would answer back with another goal by Guzman with help from Jaime.
The game was not tied for long, St. Joseph would score their third goal at the 87:00 minute mark. Ben Fisk (Allegan) scored the game tieing goal with only 2 minutes reaming to force an overtime.
Overtime did not last long, St. Joseph scored the game winning goal just one minute into overtime, making the final score 4-3.
Todd Jacobs (Romeo)
was in goal for the cardinals, facing 10 shots and making 7 saves. SVSU and St. Joseph College each had 10 shots on goal.
"We beat ourselves in this game, by giving some easy goals to the other team," commented head coach Reza Saffarian. "Everytime they scored, it didn't take us long to score, but they made less mistakes than we did and they won the game."
SVSU is now 4-12 overall and 0-6 in the GLIAC. There last game of the season will be tommorow, when they host Wisconsin-Parkside at 1:00 pm.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the University of Findlay on Sunday afternoon.
Findlay scored the first goal about three minutes into the first half. The Cardinals fought back and scored with five minutes remaining in the first half to tie the game with a goal from Junior David Patterson (Roscommon) off an assist from sophomore Ben Fisk (Allegan).
Findlay came back in the second half to take the lead with a goal that deflected of f the post.
"We are happy to have Roberto Guzman (Belize) back, he has been nursing an injury", commented SVSU head coach Reza Saffarian. "We hope he can help the team in the last two games of the season."
The Cardinals drop to 4-11 overall and 0-6 in the GLIAC. SVSU will travel to St. Joseph's College on Saturday, October 30th for a 1:00 p.m game.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 road decision to Hillsdale College on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals fought to a scoreless half-time tie but gave up two goals in the second half for the final tally.
SVSU was shut out for the ninth time this season despite out shooting the Chargers 13-5, and recording 11 corner kicks while HC managed just two.
"We tried to push the ball up the field and make something happen today," said Cardinal head coach Reza Saffarian. "Unfortunately we left our back unattended twice and Hillsdale made us pay."
The Cardinals fall to 4-10 overall this season, and to 0-5 in GLIAC play. Saginaw Valley will be in action again on Sunday, October 24 when the squad travels to the University of Findlay for a 3 p.m. contest.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 non- league decision to visiting IUPU-Fort Wayne on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals struggled offensively, playing a man down after the seventh minute of the contest when junior Roberto Guzman (Belize) received his second yellow card of the match and was ejected. Guzman had just returned to the Cardinal lineup after missing seven games with an injury.
The Mastadons dominated the game offensively from that point, out shooting the Cardinals 19-2 and garnering six corner kicks to just one for Saginaw Valley.
"We played very well considering IUPU's talent," said Saginaw Valley head coach Reza Saffarian. "I was proud of our players. They did well to minimize the damage and keep the game as close as they did."
Saginaw Valley goal keeper Todd Jacobs (Romeo) played a solid match, stopping 14 of the 16 shots he faced.
The Cardinals drop to 4-9 overall and will be in action again on Saturday, October 23rd when the squad travels to Hillsdale College for a 1 p.m contest.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated Thiel College on Sunday afternoon, by a score of 3-0.
Sophomore Ben Fisk (Allegan) scored his first of two goals in the first half off an assist from Steve Carland (Charlevoix).
Also, scoring in the first half was freshman Jim Cullen (Okemos) with an assist from Fisk.
In the second half, Fisk got his second goal with help from sophomore Aaron Stickel (Saginaw/Arthur Hill).
In goal for the Cardinals was Freshman Todd Perry (Lapeer/West), who faced two shots and made two saves.
SVSU had twenty shots on goal.
Saginaw Valley is now 4-8 overall and 0-4 in the GLIAC. They will be back in action at home on Tuesday October 19, 1999 against IUPU-Fort Wayne at 4:00 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team managed a 1-1 tie in an exhibition match with the Grand Valley State University club team on Tuesday afternoon.
Grand Valley's Wes Snyder got the Lakers on the scoreboard early with a blast just five minutes into the match. Saginaw Valley responded with a Gerald Sibanda (Harare, Zimbabwe) goal that was assisted by Dave Patterson (Roscommon) just three minutes later.
The Cardinals dominated the rest of the contest but failed to score, missing a three opportunities. Twice Saginaw Valley strikers had the Laker goal keeper beat, only to have defensemen make acrobatic saves. A third scoring chance was missed when a would-be Cardinal goal deflected off the left post and was cleared.
Freshman Todd Perry (Lapeer/West) had another solid day in goal for Saginaw Valley, saving nine of 10 shots faced and shutting out the Lakers for the final 85 minutes of the match.
"We are having problems finishing our scoring plays," said Cardinal head coach Reza Saffarian. "We have dominated the midfield in our last four or five matches but cannot seem to put the ball in the net."
The Cardinals, 3-7 overall and 0-3 in GLIAC play, will be in action again on Satuday, October 16, when the travel to Westminster College. Match time is 3 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team lost its fifth straight match, dropping a close decision to Lewis University Sunday, by a score of 1-0.
Saginaw Valley had seven shots on goal, while Lewis had ten. SVSU sophomore goalie Todd Jacobs (Romeo) faced ten shots and made 11 saves.
"We played a fantastic game, given the fact that many key players are nursing injuries, commented SVSU head coach Reza Saffarian. "We had a few opportunities and just could not capitalize, however, I am not disappointed at all".
Saginaw Valley now drops to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley will host Grand Valley on Tuesday, October 12, at 4:00 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team lost its fourth straight match, dropping a 3-0 decision to visiting Gannon University on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals played a strong game defensively, trailing 1-0 at halftime. SVSU made two critical defensive errors that led to Gannon's second-half goals. The Cardinals managed to hold the Knights to seven shots but managed only five of their own. The game was also very physical as the teams were tagged for a combined 34 fouls.
"This was a very physical game on both sides," said Cardinal head coach Reza Saffarian. "We lost two more key players in the first half and had to go deep into our bench. There was not much more we could do."
Saginaw Valley drops to 3-6 overall, and 0-3 in GLIAC. Gannon improves to 6-6, and 1-2 in league play. The Cardinals will be in action again on Sunday, October 10th when Lewis University visits University Center. Match time is 2 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team fell to visiting Madonna University by the score of 4-1 on Monday afternoon at the SVSU Soccer Field.
The Cardinals spotted the Crusaders a 1-0 lead before tying the score on a Gerald Sibanda (Harare, Zimbabwe) six-yard blast. The score was set up by a David Patterson (Roscommon) pass after some dazzling footwork that gave SVSU a two-on-one opportunity.
The Crusaders broke the tie with four minutes remaining for a 2-1 halftime advantage. Madonna would add three more unanswered goals in the final stanza for the 4-1 victory.
"We played very well considering the circumstances," stated Cardinal head coach Reza Saffarian, referring to the sloppy conditions of the playing field and the injuries to some of the Cardinals' key starters. "Offensively we played hard but failed to take advantage of good opportunities."
The Cardinals fall to 3-5 overall and will be in action again this Saturday, October 9th when SVSU will host GLIAC foe Gannon University. Match time is 3:30 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team fell to visiting Ashland University by the score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the SVSU Soccer Field.
Ashland scored the first goal of the contest at the 28:04 mark of the first half. The score was 1-0 at the half and remained close until the 38:12 mark of the second half when AU's Brian Boroff blasted a shot past Cardinal goal keeper Todd Jacobs (Romeo).
"We played very well today on both sides of the ball," said SVSU head coach Reza Saffarian. "We played with great intensity for 90 minutes but failed to score on a couple of great opportunities."
Jacobs came up with six saves for the Cardinals and was helped by a stingy defense that gave AU a small number of scoring opportunity. Ashland managed only eight shots on goal, though Saginaw Valley was held to three of their own.
Saginaw Valley drops to 3-4, and 0-2 in the GLIAC. Ashland is now 5-2, 1-0 in league play. The Cardinals will be in action again on Monday, October 4. The Cardinals will host Madonna University at 3 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team fell to nationally ranked Mercyhurst College by the score of 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lakers, ranked 13th among NCAA Division II institutions, started the scoring just 10 minutes into the contest when midfielder Brian Jankowski blasted a shot past Cardinal goal keeper Todd Jacobs (Romeo).
The score would remain 1-0 until halftime. But Mercyhurst broke the game open in the second half, scoring three goals in a span of 2:54.
"Mercyhurst started the game in a much better fashion than we did," stated Saginaw Valley coach Reza Saffarian. "In the second half they (Mercyhurst) used their size and speed effectively and scored four goals when our defense made mistakes."
Mercyhurst out shot Saginaw Valley 26-6, and had 13 corner kicks to the Cardinals' two.
The lone bright spot for the Cardinals was the play of Jacobs who tallied 15 saves, many at point blank range. "Todd played well today," continued Saffarian. "He made some very tough saves and kept the score as close as he could."
Saginaw Valley drops to 3-3, 0-1 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will be in action again on Saturday, Sept. 25th, when they host Ashland University at 3:00 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated Grace Bible College by the score of 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
Saginaw Valley's Roberto Guzman (Belize) got the Cardinals on the board in the 37th minute of the contest, off an assist from Boniface Anike (Olivet Heights, Nigeria).
The score remained 1-0 until the 84th minute of the match when Saginaw Valley was awarded a penalty kick that junior Cody Loose (Clio) punched into the net.
"Offensively we played very well today," stated Cardinal head coach Reza Saffarian. "We played most of the game on their half of the field. We had many chances but were unable to finish."
The Cardinals out shot the Tigers, 34-9, and had 10 corner kicks to their one.
Saginaw Valley goal keeper Todd Perry (Lapeer/West) gave another stellar performance, picking up a shutout and making two saves.
The Cardinals improve to 3-2 on the season and will be in action again on Tuesday, September 21 when Mercyhurst College visits University Center. Game time is 3 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team lost at the University of Indianapolis Saturday by a score of 3-0.
After a scoreless first half, Indianapolis took control of the game, including goals by Shawn Nofziger and Ben Fry.
"We kind of fell apart in the second half," said SVSU Coach Reza Saffarian. "Our defense did a great job and our goal keeper had best game, however, offensively we fell way short."
The Cardinals had only six shots, none on goal, while the Greyhounds peppered Todd Jacobs (Romeo) with 32 shots, including 19 on goal.
SVSU had two corner kicks, two offsides calls and 11 fouls, while Indianapolis had 7 corner kicks, 10 fouls and 12 offsides.
The Cardinals fell to 2-2 overall and plays at Grace Bible College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team posted the largest victory in the program's five-year history with an 8-0 shutout of Concordia College in Ann Arbor on Wednesday.
SVSU's Isiah Jaime started the scoring barrage nearly 14 minutes into the contest. Gerald Sibanda (Harare, Zimbabwe) assisted on the goal and then scored the first of his four goals at the 23:37 mark of the match. Sibanda's first goal was unassisted but Dave Patterson (Roscommon), Boniface Anike (Nigeria), and Ben Fisk (Allegan) picked up assists on the other three goals.
A total of five Cardinals tallied goals in the game including Steve Carland (Charlevoix), unassisted, Raymond Jourbran(Flushing), assisted by Jaime, and Braden Smith (Roscommon), assisted by Jim Cullen (Okemos).
"We started out stronger than we ever have before," stated coach Reza Saffarian. "Our players are on the right track to set a lot of records this season."
SVSU out shot Concordia 15-2 and tallied more corner kicks (6-5). Cardinal goal keeper Todd Jacobs (Romeo) had another strong performance, making two saves and helping the Cardinals to their second shutout this season.
"Winning the game was not good enough for our players today." continued Saffarian. "We wanted to minimize our mistakes and score as many goals as possible. We are preparing for a tough conference schedule."
The Cardinals improve to 2-1 on the season while Concordia drops to 0-1. SVSU will be in action again on Saturday, September 11 when the Cardinals travel to the University of Indianapolis for a non-conference match.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team posted a strong effort but eventually fell to visiting Alma College by the score of 2-0.
The Scots got on the scoreboard early, scoring on a deflection in the 13th minute of the contest. The Cardinals rebounded with a strong attacking effort that created numerous scoring opportunities, including a shot that deflected of the goal post, but failed to create a score. Late in the contest, with the Cardinals pressuring on the offensive end, Alma created a break away which resulted in a goal and put the match out of reach.
SVSU got a superb effort from freshman goal keeper Todd Perry (Lapeer/West). Perry faced 14 shots, eight on goal, making six saves.
"I am not disappointed at all with our effort," said SVSU coach Reza Saffarian. "It was an intense, high-quality game in which we played well. We just could not put the ball in the net today."
The Cardinals fall to 2-2 on the season and will travel to Ann Arbor to face Concordia College this Wednesday.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team played a strong game, defeating Delta College 5-0.
"We started strong, and kept the same intensity throughout," said Coach Reza Saffarian.
Junior Neil Sauer (Freeland) started the scoring for the Cardinals on a penalty kick. Sophomore Gerald Sibanda (Harare, Zimbabwe) then scored the first of his three goals with an assist from junior Greg Rubin (Lapeer/West). Sibanda also tallied the next goal, assisted by sophomore Ben Fisk (Allegan).
The fourth Cardinal goal was scored by Steve Carland, assisted once again by Fisk. Sibandathen finished his hat trick with an assist from sophomore Omar Pompey (Toronto, ONT). SVSU's record is now 2-1.
The Cardinals' next game is Saturday, September 7th, as they take on Alma College at home beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team lost for the first time this season, dropping a close game today at Indiana Tech 2-1.
Indiana Tech lead 1-0 at the half, and extended their lead with a goal early in the second half. SVSU responded with a goal by junior midfielder Roberto Guzman (Belize), assisted by freshman Jim Cullen (Okemos).
"We played a sluggish first half," said coach Reza Saffarian. "We dominated the second half, but it was too late."
SVSU had 10 shots on goal to just 5 for Indiana Tech. SVSU also had 9 corner kicks, where Tech only had 1. Sophomore goaltender Todd Jacobs (Romeo) made 5 saves for the Cardinals.
SVSU is now 1-1. Their next game is at home on Wednesday, September 2nd, when they play Delta College beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team kicked off the 1999 season with a solid 3-0 victory at Cornerstone College on Wednesday.
SVSU's first goal of the season was scored by sophomore midfielder Ciaran Byrne (Saginaw/Nouvel), with an assist from Neil Sauer (Freeland). The Cardinals' next two goals were scored by sophomore forward Gerald Simbanda (Harare, Zimbabwe), with freshman Brandon Smith (Roscommon) and junior David Patterson (Roscommon) picking up assists.
SVSU had nine shots while Cornerstone tallied 10. Corrnerstone also had more corner kicks, recording nine to the Cardinals' five.
Sophomore goal keeper Todd Joacobs (Romeo) played a strong game for SVSU, coming up with seven saves.
Saginaw Valley is now 1-0 on the young season. The next game for the Cardinals is Saturday, August 28, when the team travels to Fort Wayne, IN for a contest against Indiana Tech.
