Cardinals Honored at Awards Banquet

Award winners for the 1999-2000 Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team were announced at the 25th Annual Awards Banquet held April 9 in Curtiss Hall.
The Cardinals compiled a 13-13 overall record under second-year head coach Dean Lockwood, but won their last three games to finish 7-12 in the GLIAC, good for fifth place in the North Division.
Among the team awards presented were the rebounding award, which went to senior Greg Mallek (Merrill), who led the team with an average of 7.2 per game. Mallek barely missed a triple-double this season against Grand Valley State with 14 points, 10 blocks and 9 rebounds.
The "Defensive Award" went to sophomore Terrence Wright (Saginaw/Buena Vista), who led the team with 15.3 points and 47 steals, while pulling down 4.7 rebounds per game.
Taking the "Most Improved Player" award was freshman Cameron Nichols (Detroit/Cass Tech), a first-year letterman who played in 16 games off the bench and averaged 2.9 points.
"Senior Awards" were given to Jeff Harris (South Bend, IN/St. Joseph's), Josh Ode (Freeland), Brian Vaughn (Saginaw/Buena Vista) and Mallek. Vaughn, a four-year letterwinner, also recieved the "Thoroughbred Award" for the second straight year. This award recognizes tenacity, dedication, and perseverance.
Lockwood also handed out "3.0 Club" awards to four players who have cumulative grade point averages above that standard. On the list were sophomore Scott Lewis (Grand Ledge), junior Richard Rashad (Wayne/Memorial), and seniors, Harris and Ode, who also were four-year letterwinners.
Second-year lettermen included senior Rashard Carson (Toledo, OH/Rogers) , Carlos Ramirez (Alma), Lewis, and Wright.
Taking home their first-year awards were freshmen Ryan Reiter (Elk Rapids) and Nichols, sophomore Antonio Sherrell (Detroit/Bishop Gallagher), juniors Sean Stewart (Tyler, TX/John Tyler) and Vernon Malone (Kankakee, IL), and Mallek.
