Mallek Barely Misses Triple Double in Win

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Senior Greg Mallek (Merrill) barely missed a "triple-double," but played his best game of the season as Saginaw Valley State University knocked off Grand Valley State University 86-73 in O'Neill Arena Thursday night.
Mallek scored 15 points, blocked 10 shots, and led the Cardinals with nine rebounds. He was a force in the paint as the Cardinals held the Lakers to just 38.7 percent shooting and held the league's leading scorer, John Flynn, to 13 points.
"That was a great performance by Mallek," said second-year Cardinal coach Dean Lockwood. "He was a huge presence on the inside."
The Cardinals led from start to finish, but used a 13-0 run to build a 25-11 lead with 11:14 left in the first half. They clung to a 44-33 lead at halftime.
Grand Valley came back in the second half to cut the lead to four points, 60-56 with 8:49 left in the game, but the Cardinals held off ever Laker charge.
Junior Vernon Malone (Kankakee, IL) scored seven straight points to put the Cards up 80-67 with two minutes left to seal the win.
Sophomore Terrence Wright (Saginaw/Buena Vista) led all scorers with 18 points for SVSU, while junior Sean Stewart (Tyler, TX/John Tyler) added 17 and Malone 15. Malone also had five steals, eight assist and six rebounds.
"I was very pleased with how we played with energy," said Lockwood. "Terrence had a solid all-around effort and Stewart and Malone were very consistent."
Donte Smith led GVSU with 16 points, while Jason Bauer had 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Lakers had a 46-41 rebounding edge.
The Cardinals improved to 12-13 overall and 6-12 in the GLIAC North Division, while the Lakers have already sewn up a post-season tournament berth despite dropping to 12-13 overall and 8-10 in the league.
SVSU will try to clinch a .500 record when last-place Ferris State University visits O'Neill Arena Saturday. The Cardinals will bid farewell to five seniors in the season finale.
