Cardinals Go Cold in Loss

ALLENDALE – Saginaw Valley State University picked a bad time for a scoring drought in dropping a 90-77 decision at Grand Valley State University Thursday.
The Lakers out-scored the Cardinals 16-1 in the final 4:52, as the visitors missed their final 11 field goal attempts.
SVSU lost for the third time this season after holding a double-digit lead. The Cards led by as many as 11 points in the first half, 27-16 with 8:49 left. But Grand Valley scored the last six points of the half and led 48-40 at intermission.
The Lakers built a 10-point lead, 55-45, but 13 straight Cardinal points, capped by a three-point play by senior Greg Mallek (Merrill) put SVSU ahead 64-59 with 11 minutes left.
Senior Rashard Carson (Toledo, OH/Rogers) made a layup with 4:52 left to give the Cards a 76-74 left when a lid appeared over their rim.
After shooting 55 percent from the floor in the first half, SVSU hit only 37 percent in the second. The Lakers finished with 54 percent shooting from the floor.
Mallek broke out of a scoring slump, finishing with a team-high 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior Jeff Harris (South Bend, IN/St. Josephs) added 15 points and Carson chipped in 14. Sophomore Terrence Wright (Saginaw/Buena Vista) scored 10 points.
GLIAC leading scorer John Flynn led all scorers with 28 points for the Lakers.
The Cardinals' two-game win streak was snapped as they dropped to 9-10 overall and 3-9 in the GLIAC North Division. GVSU improved to 9-9 overall and 6-6 in the league.
SVSU travels to struggling Ferris State University Saturday.
