Cardinals Win Streak Ends in Overtime
NEW WILMINGTON,
PA – Saginaw Valley State University's three-game win streak came
to an end Saturday, when Westminster College pulled out a 76-75
overtime victory in Ridl Gymnasium.
Andy Wormsley hit a three-pointer
with 1:46 left in the extra period to put the Titans ahead to
stay. SVSU junior Vernon Malone (Kankakee, IL) hit a layup with
1:18 left for the game's final points. The Cards had two possessions
in the final minute, but had a turnover end one and could not
get a shot off in the final nine seconds.
A 12-2 scoring run in the second
half gave the Cardinals an 11-point lead with 8:09 left, and they
held the same margin, 59-48 with 6:20 left.
Westminster chipped away at the
lead and Bryan Conrad forced overtime by making a jumper with
four second left, tying the game for the 11th time, 68-68.
Senior Josh Ode (Freeland) led SVSU
with 19 points off the bench, scoring in double figures for the
first time since getting 16 in the season opener. Sophomore Terrence
Wright (Saginaw/Buena Vista) added 16 points, while Malone had
14 and Rashard Carson (Toledo, OH/Rogers) scored 11.
Wormsley led the Titans with 22
points, while Henry Klinar added 17 points and cleared a game-high
10 rebounds.
The Cardinals coughed up a season-low
nine turnovers, while forcing 14. The Titans had a 41-37 rebounding
edge.
SVSU's three-game win streak was
halted as they fell to 0-5 in the GLIAC North Division, and dropped
to 5-6 overall. Westminster improved to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in
the South.
Saginaw Valley closes its swing
through the South Division with a pair of home games, hosting
Wayne State University next Thursday and Ashland University on
Saturday.
