Cardinals Win OT Thriller Over MTU, 74-73

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team pulled out an exciting 74-73 overtime win over the Michigan Tech Huskies on Thursday (Jan. 27). The two GLIAC foes battled to a 29-29 halftime deadlock with SVSU leading much of the way. The second half saw a reversal as the Huskies led for much of the second period only to see the Cardinals battle back to tie it at 67 at the end of regulation.
     The Cardinals took the final lead in overtime on a three-pointer by sophomore Sydney McDaniel (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) to make it 72-70. The scoring was closed out with two McDaniel free throws and a three-pointer by Tech's Jason Marcotte to make the final score 74-73.
     McDaniel had a career night, dropping in a career-high and game-high 33 points on 11-of-19 shooting. McDaniel also dropped in 5-of-11 three-point attempts, was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Senior Anthony Parker (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) followed up with 18 points for the victors, while Brandon Ball (Grand Rapids, Mich./Union) provided a game-high nine assists for the Cardinals. Senior Kenneth Nether (Southfield, Mich./Canton) chipped in with nine points.
     Josh Buettner led Tech with 27 points and eight rebounds, while Jason Marcotte posted 18 points and four assists. Radayl Richardson added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies.
     
With the win the Cardinals remain in the thick of the race for a place in the GLIAC Tournament, upping their record to 9-10 (4-6 GLIAC). Tech falls to 12-6 overall and 5-5 in the conference. SVSU returns to the court on Saturday (Jan. 29) with a 3:00p.m. clash at Northern Michigan.
