CARDS DROP FOURTH STRAIGHT, 101-69, AT FERRIS STATE

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State men’s basketball team was victimized by a torrid second-half at the hands of the Ferris State Bulldogs giving up a season-high in points in a 101-69 loss on Saturday afternoon. The 32-point defeat matched the Cards worst loss of the season. Senior forward Kenny Nether (Southfield, Mich./Canton) scored 18 points on 8-of-11 from the field but managed to score just two points in the second half. Senior forward Anthony Parker (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) led SVSU with 19 points on 7-of-12 from the floor. Parker also canned three triples and grabbed three boards. Senior center David Williams (Laingsburg, Mich.) had 16 points and seven boards in 29 minutes.
Both teams traded baskets during the game’s first five minutes as the game was tied at 9-9 at the 14:57 mark. Dennis Springs scored the Bulldogs first five points, while Nether started strong with seven of SVSU’s first nine points. The Bulldogs spurted to a 11-2 run to make it 20-11 at the 11:30 mark as SVSU missed four straight shots. SVSU trailed 23-13 at the second media timeout as six different Bulldog players scored in the first 10 minutes.
Nether kept SVSU close scoring five points in a 7-0 run that made it 25-22 at the 6:52 mark. Carlton Epps, the conference’s leading scorer, paced FSU with 13 points and three triples in the first 15 minutes. Ferris State pushed the tempo and outscored SVSU 12-2 that made it 37-24 at the 4:56 mark. The Cardinals did most of their scoring inside in the first half as they scored 22 points in the paint led by Nether’s 16 first-half points. Parker chipped in with 11 points in the first half. SVSU shot 46.9 percent while FSU shot 59.3 percent. Carlton Epps had 15 points to lead the Bulldogs in the first half.
The game was broken open in the first five minutes of the second half as FSU struck for a 19-9 run sparked by fast break points and a couple of long range shots. FSU increased their lead to 83-48 on a series of spectacular passes by Springs and baskets in transition off of Cardinal misses. The Bulldogs finished with 20 fast break points and shot 61.5 percent including 63.2 percent in the second half. Springs had a double-double with 17 points and 12 assists. Carlton Epps led FSU with 20 points.
