Cardinal Men Earn
First Victory of Young Season
MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s
basketball team earned their first victory of the 2003-04 season
with a 72-60 decision over Hillsdale College on the second day of
the GLIAC North/South Classic. The action unfolded at Northwood
University.
Senior guard Tim Fralick
(Troy, Mich.) tossed in a game-high and career-high 21
points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 shooting from
three-point range, and 3-of-6 shooting from the free throw line.
Senior forward Maurice Brown (Detroit, Mich./Cody)
pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, while pitching in with
ten points. Junior forward Anthony Parker (Muskegon,
Mich./Mona Shores) also managed a double-double, recording
13 points and ten rebounds. Brown dished out a game-high four assists.
Cory Coe’s 17 points and nine
rebounds led Hillsdale. Coe was the only Charger to score in double
figures. Rodney Whaley dished out a game-high four assists, while
John Hamood racked up four steals in defeat.
SVSU head coach Dean Lockwood was
able to employ a variety of lineups, playing eight players for eleven
or more minutes. The Cardinals shot 42.4% from the field for the
game, while holding the Chargers to 29.7% shooting. SVSU also held
a 50-39 advantage on the boards and an 11-10 advantage in assists.
The Cardinals raise their record to
1-1 on the young season, while Hillsdale falls to 1-3. SVSU returns
to the court on Tuesday (November 25) when they travel to Madonna
University for a 7:00p.m. clash with the Crusaders.
