Cardinals Stun Warriors in OT

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team pulled out an exciting 100-94 overtime victory over the Wayne State University Warriors on Saturday (November 30). The win avenges the Cardinals' loss to the Warriors in the first game of the season.
Sophomore Anthony Parker (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores HS) posted a game-high and career-high of 46 points, including a three-pointer from just inside of half-court to tie the game at 84, forcing overtime. Parker shot 12-21 from the floor, 6-8 from three-point range, and 16-17 on free throws. He amassed his total with 16 first half points, 20 second half points, and ten points in overtime. Maurice Brown (Detroit, Mich./Cody HS) posted his third double-double of the season with 14 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Also reaching double figures for the Cardinals were junior Tim Fralick (Troy, Mich.) and senior Terrence Wright (Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista HS), with twelve points and eleven points respectively. Fralick also added a game-high six assists in 23 minutes of action.
Wayne State was led by Kendall LeSure, who recorded a team-high 22 points on 6-12 shooting from the floor and 4-9 shooting from three-point range. Kendon Edwards posted 20 points to go with a game-high 18 rebounds, and Justin Chapman posted 16 points for the Warriors.
The Cardinals took a 40-31 lead into the half, only to fall behind by as many as seven points in the second half before coming back to force overtime on Parker's shot. Trailing by a score of 82-79 with only seven seconds showing on the clock, the Cardinals could only manage a two-point basket from Maurice Brown with 1.8 seconds remaining. After making the put-back, Brown called a time-out the Cardinals did not possess and was assessed a technical foul. LeSure knocked down both free throws to push the Wayne State lead to 84-81. However, the Warriors still had to run out the remaining time on the clock to seal the victory. SVSU's Anthony Parker would not allow that to happen, as he stole the Warrior in-bound pass just inside of half-court and, in one motion, turned and lofted an arcing shot that hit nothing but the bottom of the net with no time remaining on the clock. The shot sent the game into overtime and the Cardinals would go on to control the extra period, outscoring the Warriors 16-10.
The Cardinals outplayed the Warriors in many important statistical categories. SVSU held a 48-40 margin in rebounds, a slim margin of 45.7% to 44.4% in field goal percentage, and a margin of 80.6% to 66.7% in free throws. The Cardinals also shot 47.8% (11-23) from three-point range, making five more than the Warriors. Also, head coach Dean Lockwood was able to play eight players for at least twelve minutes in the victory, with Parker staying on the floor for all of the games' 45 minutes.
SVSU moves to 3-2 (1-0 GLIAC) on the season, while Wayne State drops to 2-2 (0-1 GLIAC). The Cardinals are set to return to the court against the Hillsdale College Chargers on Monday (December 2) at 7:30p.m. in James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.
