Oilers Spoil New Year for Cardinals

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team fell 73-70 to the University of Findlay on Saturday (January 4). Guard Dustin Pfeifer drilled a three point shot as time expired to lift the Oilers to victory.
Senior Terrence Wright (Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista HS) recorded a team-high 23 points, while junior Maurice Brown (Detroit, Mich./Cody HS) chipped in with 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Anthony Parker (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores HS) also reached double figures in the scoring column with ten points. Brown and Parker each dished out a game-high four assists.
The Oilers placed only two players in double figures in points. Brad Rethman posted a game-high 24 and Charles Warren chipped in with eleven. Rethman managed his total on 10-14 shooting from the field. It was Pfeifer, however, who came up big in the end with three of his eight points coming as the final buzzer sounded.
The Cardinals took a slim 33-30 margin into half-time and never relinquished their lead until the final minute of the game. The Oilers took their first lead of the second half, 68-67, with only 59 seconds on the clock. Findlay pushed it to 70-67 before Wright tied the game on a three pointer with four seconds remaining.
SVSU falls to 8-5 (2-2 GLIAC) on the season while Findlay moves to 10-2 (3-1 GLIAC). The Cardinals return to action on Thursday (January 9) as they travel to Erie, Pa. for a 7:30p.m. contest against Gannon University.
