Cardinals Drop Heartbreaker to Northern

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team came up on the short end of a 64-60 decision against Northern Michigan University on Saturday (January 18). The Cardinals took a 28-27 lead into halftime and built an eleven point lead (48-37) with 11:30 remaining in the game before Northern Michigan took control with a 16-2 run over a five minute span.
     Sophomore Anthony Parker (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores HS) topped SVSU with a team-high 17 points, while senior Terrence Wright (Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista HS) added 15 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore David Williams (Laingsburg, Mich.) also scored in double figures with ten points to go with six rebounds. Junior Maurice Brown (Detroit, Mich./Cody HS) added game highs of eleven rebounds and five assists to the Cardinal cause.
     Marco Volcy led the way for the Wildcats with 23 points, while Billy Hill added twelve points and a team-high nine rebounds. Volcy managed his point total courtesy of 8-19 shooting from the floor and 4-7 shooting from beyond the three-point arc.
     The loss is the Cardinals’ sixth straight and drops them to 8-9 (2-6 GLIAC) on the season, while the Wildcats move to 10-6 (6-2 GLIAC). SVSU returns to the court on Thursday (January 23) at 7:30p.m. against Ferris State University in the James E. O’Neill, Jr. Arena.
