Cardinals Fall to Mercyhurst 91-86

ERIE, Pa. - The duo of Joshua Helm and Scott Melle propelled the Mercyhurst College Lakers past Saginaw Valley State University, 91-86 on Saturday (Jan. 11). Helm scored a game-high 28 points while Melle added 23.
   The Cardinals (8-7, 2-4) led 41-39 at the intermission and the game remained close through the second half. The score was tied 78-78 with 4:03 remaining in the contest but SVSU managed just three field goals in final four minutes of play. During that same stretch the Lakers connected on nine of 14 free throw attempts.
   Anthony Parker (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores HS) led the Cardinals with 21 points. Terrence Wright (Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista HS) added 18 points while Maurice Brown (Detroit, Mich./Cody HS) recorded 18 points and a game-high eleven rebounds.
   The Lakers (11-6, 3-4) shot 54 percent from the floor while the Cardinals made 48.6 of their field goal attempts. SVSU was unable to find its touch from behind the arc, as the Cardinals went 5-of-18 from three-point range.
   The Cardinals return to action on Thursday (Jan. 16) when they host Michigan Tech University at 7:30 p.m.
