Nichols, Cardinals Sink Lakers
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw
Valley State University men’s basketball team topped Lake
Superior State by a score of 80-69 on Thursday (February 20) at
James E. O’Neill, Jr. Arena. The Cardinals went into the half
with a commanding 14-point lead (38-24) and did not allow the Lakers
to get any closer than eight points after the break.
Senior Cameron Nichols
(Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech HS) went 6-of-10 from beyond
the arc, en route to a season-high and team-high 21 points for the
Cardinals. Five Cardinals reached double figures in the scoring
column. Following Nichols’ performance was sophomore David
Williams (Laingsburg, Mich.), who recorded his
third double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high
twelve rebounds. Seniors Jerry Minott (Muskegon,
Mich./Catholic Central HS) and Terrence Wright
(Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista HS) added 13 points and twelve
points, respectively. Sophomore Anthony Parker
(Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores HS) rounded out the double-figure
contingent with ten points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Scott Jamison, who rang up 23 points
on 8-of-13 shooting, led the Lakers. The Cardinals used a host of
defenders, led by Nichols, to hold the GLIAC’s leading scorer
Ben Dewar to only 13 points. Dewar shot 5-of-19 from the field and
failed to connect on any of his eight three-point attempts.
SVSU held significant advantages in
field goal percentage (47.6% to 38.5%) and three point percentage
(50.0% to 18.5%), while also controlling the boards (42-35) against
the Lakers. The Cardinals shot 14-of-28 from beyond the arc, falling
one connection short of the school record.
The win ups the Cardinals’ record
to 12-14 (6-11 GLIAC), while the Lakers fall to 12-15 (6-12 GLIAC).
SVSU returns to the court for their final game of the season on
Saturday (February 22) against Northwood University at 3:00p.m.
in the James E. O’Neill, Jr. Arena.
