Lakers Stun Cardinals in Overtime

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Courtney James hit a three-point shot for Grand Valley State University at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime and the visiting Lakers went on to claim a 103-93 victory over the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team on Saturday (January 25).
     Grand Valley State had five players score in double figures, with Jason Bauer leading the way with 25 points and ten rebounds. Courtney James and Eric Voisin followed with 19 points and 18 points, respectively. Justen Naughton and Al Mans rounded out the Lakers' double-digit contingent with 13 and eleven points.
     SVSU sophomore Anthony Parker (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores HS) scored a game-high 29 points on 10-of-21 shooting, and junior Maurice Brown (Detroit, Mich./Cody HS) added 18 points and a game-high eleven rebounds for the Cardinals. Senior Terrence Wright (Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista HS) pitched in with 16 points and pulled down ten rebounds, while sophomore Rojelio Grady (Dearborn, Mich./Fordson HS) dished out a game-high five assists and tossed in nine points.
     Grand Valley held a commanding 49-35 lead going into halftime, only to see the Cardinals storm out of the lockerroom with a 14-4 run, eventually taking a one point lead (64-63) with 8:12 remaining. The Lakers played from behind the rest of regulation until tying the game on James’ buzzer beater. GVSU went on to outscore the Cardinals 19-9 in the extra session to come away with the tough GLIAC victory.
     The loss drops the Cardinals’ record to 9-10 (3-7 GLIAC), while Grand Valley ups its record to 9-9 (4-6 GLIAC). SVSU returns to action on Thursday (January 30) with a road contest against Northwood University at 7:30p.m.
