Eagles Soar in Win Over Cardinals
ASHLAND, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball
team dropped a 104-76 decision to Ashland University on Thursday
(December 5). The Eagles ran out to a 52-30 halftime lead and the
Cardinals could pull no closer than 17 points after the break. The
loss snaps the Cardinals four-game winning streak.
Four players scored in double figures
for the Cardinals, with junior Maurice Brown (Detroit,
Mich./Cody HS) leading the way with 18 points and a game-high
10 rebounds to give him his fourth double-double of the season.
Sophomore David Williams (Laingsburg, Mich.) posted
another strong performance with 17 points on 8-12 shooting and seven
rebounds in only 19 minutes of action. Sophomore Anthony Parker
(Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores HS) and senior Terrence Wright
(Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista HS) each added 13 points for
SVSU. Parker, the Cardinals' leading scorer on the season, played
only 23 minutes as he fouled out for the first time this season.
Ashland also had four players in double
figures, with Isaac Kincaid ringing up 24 points on 7-8 shooting
from the floor and 9-9 shooting from the free throw line. Mike Campbell
posted a double-double with 17 points and a game-high ten rebounds,
while Angelo Edwards and Chris Steens recorded twelve and eleven
points, respectively. Edwards also added a game-high five assists
for the Eagles.
The Eagles held advantages in all
three shooting categories. They topped the Cardinals with a 52.2%
to 37.3% margin in field goal percentage, a 46.7% to 20.0% advantage
in three-point percentage, and an 83.3% to 65.4% margin in free-throw
percentage. They also topped the Cardinals in rebounds by a count
of 48-38, leading to an 18-4 disparity in fast break points in favor
of the Eagles. The Eagles' bench also outscored the Cardinals' bench
by a score of 38-15.
The loss drops the Cardinals to 4-3
(2-1 GLIAC), while the Eagles move to 5-0 (1-0 GLIAC) on the season.
SVSU returns to action Saturday (December 7) with a 3:00p.m. game
against Madonna University in the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.
