Bilina
Back on Football Field After Battle with Cancer
by Daren
Tomhave - Port Huron Times Herald
Mike
Bilina spent the week leading up to the Saginaw Valley State University
football team's season opener against Northwood University much like
the rest of his teammates. He went to practice. He reviewed the game
plan. He studied the scouting reports. But what was routine for the
Cardinals was anything but for Bilina, a 2002 Marysville graduate.
"It
was just nice to have those butterflies and go through the game preparation
again," said Bilina, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound sophomore linebacker.
"It was neat to actually have an opponent to play against."

Jackson
Catches On With Cardinals
Written by Rick Schulte -
Detroit Free Press
When Jermaine Jackson was playing football at Detroit Pershing, he
lined up at both wide receiver and tight end. Not exactly the position
to get a lot of college notice when your high school team runs a wing-T.
"We didn't pass very much," Jackson said. "And when
we did, it was a fade every time." Even though his receiving
talent wasn't showcased much with the Doughboys, Jackson has become
a solid wide receiver at Saginaw Valley State University. He's shown
an ability to put up some fine numbers in a spread offense -- the
polar opposite of a wing-T. (More) |

Rally in Final Minute and Reclaim Axe, 9-7, at Northwood
MIDLAND, Mich. – The 31st annual
Axe Bowl between Saginaw Valley State and Northwood turned into a
tough defensive battle and ended in dramatic fashion as SVSU scored
a touchdown with 23 seconds left to pull off a 9-7 win at Hantz Stadium.

(Grinnell, Iowa) in his first career start for the Cardinals
looked poised on the final drive of the game which began at the SVSU
20-yard line with 1:08 remaining. He scrambled for eleven yards on
first down and after two plays yielded no yards on third and nine
from the 31-yard line, Dougherty found sophomore wideout Rick
Cottengim (Elk Grove, Calif.) on the visitor sideline
and threw over two defenders for a 69-yard TD reception and exuberance
from the SVSU sideline. Northwood advanced to the SV 49-yard line
and fittingly senior linebacker John DiGiorgio (Shelby
Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) made the game's final tackle in the middle
of the field and Northwood with no timeouts to stop the clock. (More) |
