Roll Up 602 Yards in 42-3 Win over Findlay
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley
State University Cardinals won their third straight game to start
the season by a score of 42-3 on Saturday (September 17th). Saginaw
Valley State University put their mark on the game early with a
21-0 lead after the first quarter, and finished the game outscoring
Findlay 21-3 the rest of the way.
Saginaw Valley back Logan Barnhart (Haslett,
Mich.) started the scoring with a 60-yard run less than a minute
and a half into the game. The Cardinals only minutes later scored
on a 55-yard pass from Chris Dougherty (Grinnell,
Iowa) to Tony Awrey (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel
Catholic) on the first play of the drive. With 4:53 left in
the first quarter, Barnhart scored again on a 3 yard run to give
the Cardinals a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Late in the second quarter the Cardinals continued with their theme
in the first quarter by capping off a seven-play, 90 yard drive
with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Steve Brander
(Jenison, Mich.) from Dougherty with 34 seconds left in
the half.
The third quarter marked Findlay’s only points of the game
with a 27 yard field goal by Roland Hamilton. However, the Cardinals
scored two touchdowns in the 4th quarter to put the game away. Both
touchdowns were passes from Dougherty to Barnhart and Bob
Awrey (Freeland, Mich.) respectively.
Saginaw Valley’s offense out-gained Findlay’s by a count
of 602 yards of total offense to 133 yards. SVSU managed 347 yards
through the air, while holding Findlay to just 58 passing yards
all game. The Cardinals also gained more yards on ground than Findlay
by rushing for 180 more yards then their opponent (255-75).
The Cardinals were led by Dougherty, who completed 27-of-41 passes
for 347 yards and four touchdowns. Freshman Tony Awrey capitalized
most on Dougherty’s big game by getting his first 100 yard
receiving game of his young career. Barnhart also had a career day
with 143 yards on the ground, and three touchdowns. The Cardinals
defense was led by Josh Miller (Waterford,
Mich./Mott), who had three sacks to go along with his eight
tackles. Not far behind was Saginaw Valley’s Dan Fodrocy
(Muskegon, Mich./Catholic Central), who had eight tackles
and two sacks.
Michael Simpson led the way for Findlay with 79 rushing yards on
22 carries.
The win pushes the Cardinals to 3-0 (3-0 GLIAC), while Findlay drops
to 3-1 (2-1 GLIAC). The Cardinals next game is at Hillsdale on Saturday,
September 24th at 7:00 pm.
