Cardinals Bury Wildcats,
42-7
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University
Cardinals took a 35-0 lead into the halftime break and ended with
a 42-7 victory over the Northern Michigan University Wildcats on
Saturday (October 23) in front of 3,207 spectators at Wickes Memorial
Stadium.
The Cardinals opened the scoring on
a 13-yard touchdown pass from Mark Radlinski (Grand
Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) to Bob Awrey
(Freeland, Mich.) with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter.
The offense proceeded to take off in the second quarter with four
touchdowns. Justin Barcey (Flint, Mich./Powers
Catholic) reached paydirt from eight yards out, Michael
Collins (Rochester, Mich./Adams) powered in from
three yards out and Logan Barnhart (Haslett,
Mich.) plunged in from the one-yard line before Rick
Cottengim (Elk Grove, Calif.) closed out the first-half
scoring with a seven-yard touchdown reception from Radlinski.
Barnhart scored the Cardinals' only
touchdown of the second half on a two-yard run with 7:31 remaining
in the game. Northern Michigan’s only points came on a ten-yard
touchdown pass from Gary Rivera to Vincent Mayfield.
The Cardinals produced 393 yards of
total offense on the afternoon, while holding Northern Michigan
to 249 total yards. Barnhart produced a game-high 93 yards on 18
carries, including two touchdowns. Radlinski completed 9-of-17 pass
attempts for 184 yards and two touchdowns in only one half of work
for the Cardinals. Senior quarterback Brad Sundholm
(Hardwood, Mich./North Dickinson) completed 5-of-10 pass
attempts for 77 yards in relief of Radlinski. Mike Crawford
(Lake Orion, Mich.) caught four passes for 33 yards, Awrey
tallied three grabs for 90 yards and a touchdown and Cottengim reeled
in two catches for 43 yards and a score.
The SVSU defense held the Wildcats
to just 68 yards rushing, with Abram McCoy leading the way with
46 yards on 17 attempts. The Northern Michigan passing game struggled,
as well, completing only 20-of-47 passes for 181 yards and two interceptions.
Kelly Reed and Gary Rivera each saw significant action under center
for the Wildcats.
Junior linebacker John DiGiorgio
(Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) tallied ten tackles,
two tackles-for-loss, one sack and one pass breakup to lead the
Cardinal defense. Dan Fodrocy (Muskegon, Mich./Catholic
Central) chipped in with three tackles-for-loss, two sacks
and an interception that he returned 25 yards. Freshman Jason
Marble (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich./Sault Area) recorded
two sacks, while seniors Pierre Colin (Cooper
City, Fla.) and Neil Baumgartner (Iron
River, Mich./West Iron County) each recorded one sack. Defensive
back Mark Miller (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech)
chipped in with a his first career interception, returning it seven
yards.
The Cardinals improve to 6-2 (6-2
GLIAC), while Northern Michigan falls to 2-6 (2-6 GLIAC). Saginaw
Valley State hits the road for a clash with the top-ranked team
in the region, Michigan Tech, on Saturday (October 30). Kickoff
is set for noon.
