CARDS FINISH REGULAR SEASON
WITH A 47-14 WIN AT FERRIS STATE
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State
used another lethal first-half to produce a 38-0 halftime lead and
would eventually cruise to a 47-14 win at Ferris State. The Cardinals
took the opening kickoff and proceeded to put Ferris State in an
early hole taking a 7-0 lead. Senior Mark Radlinski
(Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) found junior Stan
Spencer (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) for a 50-yard bomb
putting SVSU at the FS 10-yard line for a key play and the scoring
play was an eight-yard TD run by junior Logan Barnhart
(Haslett, Mich.).
After three straight three-and-outs by both teams, Saginaw Valley
State used an eight-play, 49-yard drive which was culminated in
a 34-yard field goal by Bobby Belmonte (East
Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) to take a 10-0 lead with
5:55 left in the opening quarter. The Cards fourth drive of the
game ended with a 54-yard TD catch by freshman Rick Cottengim
(Elk Grove, Calif.) with 2:39 left in the first making
it 17-0. The first quarter was all Cardinals as they outgained Ferris
State, 190-18, in total offense.
The second quarter began with a fourth-and-two in Cardinal territory,
but the Cardinals held on defense with an incomplete pass by quarterback
Ryan Kaul. The Bulldogs got the ball back after a three-and-out
and held the ball for over five minutes. The end result was no points
as senior Neil Baumgartner (Iron River, Mich./West
Iron County) sacked Kaul making it third-and-17 for the Bulldogs.
The Cardinals got a break late in the half as Ferris State muffed
a punt and Joe Hermann (Grosse Pointe, Mich.)
recovered for the Cards at the Bulldog 42-yard line. Two plays later,
Cottengim hauled in his second TD catch from 41 yards with 1:28
left in the half giving SVSU a 24-0 advantage.
The Cardinals recovered a Kaul fumble at the FS 12-yard line on
the Bulldogs next possession and sophomore Bob Awrey
(Freeland, Mich.) caught a 12-yard TD pass from Radlinski
capping off a two-play, 12-yard drive making it 31-0 with 1:07 to
go. The fireworks were not over for the Cardinals as their defense
would make the final big play of the half. The Bulldogs drove from
their own 38-yard line to the SV two-yard line and on the final
play of the second quarter, senior safety Corey Gonzales
(Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale) broke a school-record with
a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown capping off a 38-0
lead at the break.
The second half scoring was all Belmonte as he tied a school-record
with four field goals in a game. He booted two third-quarter field
goals from 39 and 41 yards respectively. In addition, he connected
on a 31-yard field goal with 12:28 left in the game giving him a
four-for-four afternoon. Radlinski was 18-of-32 for 283 yards and
three TD’s for SVSU in his last game. Radlinski ends his career
