HERREMANS NAMED GLIAC CO-OFFENSIVE
LINEMAN OF THE YEAR AND 10 OTHER PLAYERS RECEIVE GLIAC POSTSEASON
HONORS
BAY CITY, Mich. – Senior offensive tackle
Todd Herremans (Ravenna, Mich.) was named
Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year today in balloting conducted by
the league’s head coaches. Herremans shared the honor with
senior Joe Berger of Michigan Tech. Herremans was a four-year letterman
and a four-year starter for the Cardinals having started 40 career
games. He started 10 games at left tackle this season and anchored
an offensive line that helped the Cardinals rank 25th nationally
in total offense (423.1 ypg). Herremans was named a Preseason All-American
by Lindy’s Magazine and including this season is a two-time
First Team All-GLIAC selection. “Todd is a great talent with
a bright future ahead of him,” said head coach Randy Awrey.
In addition to Herremans, three other Cardinals were named First
Team All-GLIAC on defense including senior Neil Baumgartner
(Iron River, Mich./West Iron County), senior Corey
Gonzales (Auburn Hills, Mich./Avondale) and junior
John DiGiorgio (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower).
Baumgartner is a two-time first team pick who this season totaled
65 tackles and 4.5 sacks for a loss of 28 yards. He had a stellar
career at SVSU ranking second all-time with 21 sacks and 14th with
258 career tackles. He also is a standout in the classroom having
won First Team Academic All-American honors last season with a 4.0
GPA. “Neil is one of the finest young men I’ve ever
coached and he is as good of a person as you’ll ever meet,”
said Awrey.
Gonzales had a fine senior season for the Cardinals in the secondary.
He ranked second on the team with 76 tackles and also had 10 pass
breakups and five interceptions. Gonzales finished his career tied
for fourth at SVSU with 15 interceptions and is 24th all-time with
217 career tackles. He received Honorable Mention All-GLIAC status
a year ago and was Second Team All-GLIAC in 2002. “Corey is
a great person and a talented athlete who will be sorely missed
next season,” said Awrey.
DiGiorgio led the team in tackles for the second straight year in
2004. He totaled 110 stops at the linebacker position and posted
double-digit tackles in eight games. DiGiorgio is rapidly moving
up the career charts at SVSU and is currently sixth all-time with
320 tackles in 35 career games. DiGiorgio had four sacks for a loss
of 27 yards and forced two fumbles. He was a Second Team All-GLIAC
pick a year ago. “John is one of the best linebackers in the
country and he will be back next season as a team captain who leads
by example,” said Awrey.
Senior quarterback Mark Radlinski (Grand Rapids,
Mich./Catholic Central) was named Second Team All-GLIAC after
throwing for 2,506 yards and 27 TD’s. Radlinski is one of
26 candidates for the 2004 Harlon Hill Trophy and was named GLIAC
Player of the Year in 2003. He set several school records including
most passing yards (7,075), most passing TD’s (71) and highest
completion percentage (60.6). “Mark’s records speak
for themselves and he is leaving awfully big shoes to be filled
next year,” said Awrey.
Sophomore Damion DeRosia (Flint, Mich./EA Johnson)
was named Second Team All-GLIAC on the defensive line. DeRosia recorded
37 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss this season. He played in 10
games this season and also had five pass breakups and one interception.
DeRosia was named to the Freshman All-Region team last year. “Damion
is a very skilled and agile man that continues to improve and his
future is very bright at SVSU,” said Awrey.
The Cardinals also had five players receive Honorable Mention All-GLIAC
plaudits including senior defensive lineman Pierre Colin
(Cooper City, Fla.), senior center Nic LaFear
(Davison, Mich.), senior safety Nicholas Postma
(Rudyard, Mich.), junior offensive lineman Stephanol
Santos (Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista) and junior
punter Dustin Esslin (Pickford, Mich.).
“We are very excited about these honors for very deserving
young men,” commented Awrey. “It was a pleasure to coach
all of our players and we will miss our departing seniors and wish
them well in the future.”
