Cardinals Win Thriller Over Northern Michigan 28-24

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University Football team won a thrilling 28-24 contest over the host Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday
(November 9). After the Wildcats scored 15 consecutive points to take a 24-21 lead, Keath Bartynski (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel CC) scored from three yards out with 5:20 left in the game to give the Cardinals a 28-24 advantage. SVSU's defense then stopped two NMU possessions, and allowed the Cardinals to run out the clock.
The Wildcats outgained the Cardinals in total offense by a 578 to 359 margin, but on three different occasion in the first half, the SVSU defense forced Northern Michigan to settle for field goals inside the red zone, yielding just nine points in the first half. The Cardinals enjoyed a 14-9 halftime advantage thanks to two touchdown receptions by wide receiver Ruvell Martin (Muskegon, Mich./Catholic Central HS).
Martin and quarterback Matt LaFleur (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) hooked up a third time early in the third quarter to push SVSU's lead to 21-9 on a nine-yard touchdown pass. Northern Michigan's Nick Mauthe scored on a 62-yard reception to cut the SVSU lead to 21-16. The Wildcats took the lead on a 32-yard run by Abram McCoy before adding a two-point conversion with 10:23 left in the fourth quarter.
Junior wideout Glenn Martinez (Auburndale, Fla.) recorded a career-high 168 receiving yards in the win. Nick Allen (Big Rapids, Mich.) and Jason Battershell (Rochester Hills, Mich.) led the defense, as each recorded nine tackles. Allen also tallied his 19th career sack, moving him into a tie for third place on SVSU's all-time sack list with Eugene Marve (1978-81) and Paul Spicer (1996-97). Junior running back Jason Chounard (Norway, Mich.) became the school's all-time leader in punt return yardage (1,011 yards). Chounard finished with 34 yards on five returns, moving him past
Charles Davis (1993-96) and into the top spot.
The Cardinals close out the regular season on Saturday (November 16) when they travel to face the Wayne State Warriors in Detroit, Mich. Kickoff is set for Noon.
