Cardinals Open GLIAC Season With Win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University opened their GLIAC season with a victory over the Michigan Tech University Huskies 35-21. The Cardinals jumped out to a 14-0 lead early on in the second quarter and never looked back.
    Senior signal caller Matt LaFleur ( Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) led the Cards to an early advantage, courtesy of a 19-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Sophomore Mark Radlinski (Caledonia, Mich./Catholic Central HS) came on in relief of LaFleur for the second consecutive week, and immediately connected with senior Travis McAlpine (Pontiac, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) on an eight yard pass to the corner of the end zone. The duo of Radlinski and McAlpine didn't stop there, as they also connected on a two yard pass to end the second quarter, and an 83-yard bomb with 11:23 to play in the third quarter. McAlpine led the recievers with five catches for 135 yards and three touchdowns, while Damion Bridges (Lansing, Mich./Eastern HS) led the rushing game, gaining 89 yards on 15 carries. Radlinski finished the game 9-of-16 for 189 yards and three touchdowns.
   Michigan Tech's Joe Johnson led all rushers, toting the ball 143 yards on 29 carries. Chris Lomasney also gained 88 yards on six carries.
   The Cardinal defense was led by senior Jason Battershell (Rochester Hills, Mich.) who recorded thirteen tackles. Freshman Daniel Fodrocy (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon CC) also tallied eight tackles for the defense.
   SVSU improves to 2-0 overall (1-0 GLIAC), while the loss drops Michigan Tech to
1-1 overall (1-1 GLIAC). The Cardinals return to action next Saturday (Sept. 21) as they play host to Mercyhurst College. Kickoff is set for Noon..
