Bulldogs Bite Cardinals 24-3

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The ninth-ranked Saginaw Valley State University football team suffered its second consecutive loss after a 24-3 defeat at the hands of Ferris State on Saturday (October 26). The Cardinal offense, entered the contest averaging 491 yards of total offense, managed just 252 yards against the Bulldogs. SVSU finished just
one-for-sixteen on third down.
   Ferris State opened the scoring late in the first quarter on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Tom Marsan to Andy Thwaites. The Bulldogs held the Cardinals scoreless in the first half, and carried the 7-0 lead into halftime. FSU improved its lead to 14-0 with 10:53 left in the third quarter on an 89-yard punt return for a touchdown by Carlton Brewster.
   After Tom Perez connected on a 27-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 17-0 lead, the Cardinals put together a drive which resulted in a 25-yard field goal by Eric Houle (Flint, Mich./Kearsley HS). Derek Fudge scored from two-yards out midway through the fourth quarter to close out the scoring and seal the win for FSU.
   Defensively, the Cardinals were led by Jason Battershell (Rochester Hills, Mich.) who finished with a career-high 16 tackles, including one for loss. Pat Cavanaugh (Troy, Mich./Bishop Foley HS) also turned in a strong defensive performance with ten tackles and two interceptions.
   The Cardinals return to action on Saturday (November 2) when they host the Hillsdalle Chargers at Wickes Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon.
