Cardinals Place Four on All-Academic Team

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University football team placed four individuals on the 2002 Academic All-District IV Team, selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Candidates were required to carry a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be at least a junior in class standing, and be a starter or key reserve for their team.
    Senior quarterback Matt LaFleur (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) was named the second-team quarterback. The physical education major carries a 3.70 gpa. He was a member of the GLIAC Football All-Academic team in 2001.
    Seniors Nick Allen (Big Rapids, Mich.) and Stephen Poindexter (Flushing, Mich.) were named to the second-team defense. Allen leads the team with eleven tackles for loss, and is third on the team with 59 tackles. He carries a 3.20 gpa in Education. Poindexter is a physical education major with a 3.66 gpa. He has 37 tackles on the season, to go along with three fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble.
    Senior safety Pat Cavanaugh (Troy, Mich./Bishop Foley HS) was named to the third team defense. Cavanaugh ranks second on the team in tackles (83) and interceptions (3). He is an education major with a 3.20 grade point average.
    The Cardinals (8-2, 7-2) finish their regular season schedule on Saturday
(November 16), when they travel to face the Wayne State Warriors. Kickoff is set for noon.
