                                               Cardinals Cage Greyhounds

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals Football team put on an offensive scoring show today, (Oct. 5) as they beat the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds by a score of 63-24. Indianapolis scored first, on a 34 yard field goal by Nick Parker with 11:00 minutes to play in the first quarter. That was the last lead the Hounds would have as the Cardinals rattled off 14 unanswered points to end the first quarter. They then went on to take a 35-10 lead going into the halftime.
     Offensively the Cards were led by their quarterbacks, as senior Matt LaFleur (Mt.Pleasant, Mich.) went 10-16 for 189 yards with 2 touchdowns, while sophomore Mark Radlinski (Caldonia,Mich./Catholic Central HS) was almost perfect going 5-6 for 172 yards and 3 scoring strikes. On the receiving end of those passes were Glenn Martinez (Auburndale, Fla) who hauled in 5 catches for 112 yards, including a 66 yard touchdown reception. Mark LaFreniere (Iron Mountain, Mich.) caught two passes for 54 yards on the day, while turning both into touchdowns. Rounding out the receiving corps, Ruvell Martin (Muskegon,Mich./Catholic Central HS) and Travis McAlpine (Pontiac, Mich./Notre Dame Prep HS) had three catches apiece for 80 and 67 yards, respectively. The ground game was led by senior Keath Bartynski (Saginaw,Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central HS) who recorded 31 yards on nine carries.
     Defensively Jason Battershell (Rochester Hills,Mich.) tallied a game-high 12 tackles, while fellow linebackers John DiGiorgio (Shelby Township, Mich./Eishenhower HS) and Steve Poindexter (Flushing,Mich.) each had nine tackles. DiGiorgio also scored for the second consecutive week, picking up a fumble and racing 25 yards to paydirt.
     For the Greyhounds, quarterback Matt Kohn threw for 304 yards on the day, but was picked off 3 times.
     The Cardinals improve to 4-0 (3-0 GLIAC) with the victory, while the loss drops Indianapolis to 2-3 (1-3 GLIAC) on the season. SVSU will return to action next Saturday, Oct.12, as they travel to Findlay to take on the Oilers. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
