Cards Win Three out of Four During Weekend With Split Against Grand Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State baseball team jumped up the GLIAC standings this weekend and on Sunday split a doubleheader with visiting #24 Grand Valley State. The Lakers won game one, 8-3, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh on Cardinal miscues. In the nightcap, SVSU scored twice in the bottom of the first and cruised to a 7-3 win. (Recap)

Cards Earn Dramatic Sweep of Grand Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – In one of the most dramatic doubleheaders in SVSU history, the Cardinals earned a sweep of Grand Valley State with a 2-1 win in game one and a 1-0 12-inning classic in game two. The pitching of both staffs was the story as both teams went scoreless over a 17-inning span after the teams scored their runs in the first inning of game one and finally scored in the bottom of the 12th inning in game two. Freshman Scott Roy (Mt. Morris, Mich.) threw all 12 innings and struck out 10 in game two for the win. (Recap)

Cards Score 31 Runs in Sweep of Alma

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The offense kept rolling along this season for the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals as they recorded a pair of wins on Wednesday from the SVSU Baseball Field. SVSU scored a season-high 21 runs in a 21-3 game one win which featured 19 walks from Alma pitching and three big innings. SVSU scored six runs in the third inning, eight in the fourth and seven in the fifth after being held scoreless in the first two innings. Junior Aaron Dorgan (Jackson, Mich.) improved to 2-0 on the hill going six innings and allowing two hits and one earned run. Dorgan threw 92 pitches and struck out five. (Recap)

Cards Tripped Up By Spartans, 20-9

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State baseball squad ran into a tough hitting ballclub on Tuesday as the Michigan State Spartans pounded out 26 hits and cruised to a 20-9 win. Junior Elijah Martin (Imlay City, Mich.) took the loss and falls to 2-1 on the year. Martin tossed two innings and gave up seven earned runs. Junior Dale Marsden (Sarnia, Ont.) had the best hitting day as he collected two doubles and two RBI in three at-bats. (Recap)

Cards Split Against Hillsdale

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State won three out of four games against Hillsdale College this weekend and split a pair of games on Sunday. Hillsdale scored five times in the top of the seventh in game one to break a 3-3 tie and win 8-3. SVSU scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game setting up the final inning. Junior Jason Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) reached base five times in game two and hit .500 for the weekend with nine walks. (Recap)

Cards Improve to 15-4 with a Sweep of Hillsdale

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The SVSU Cardinals have now won eight straight games after improving to 15-4 overall and 5-1 in the GLIAC with a pair of wins on Saturday over Hillsdale College. SVSU claimed a 5-4 win in game one coming back from a 3-0 deficit after Hillsdale scored three in the top of the first off starter Elijah Martin (Imlay City, Mich.). The Cardinals cut the lead to 3-2 after one inning as senior Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) ripped a two-run double to right center. Junior Justin Doughty (Oscoda, Mich.) was 3-for-3 with two doubles in game two. (Recap)

Reid Throws Complete Game in 15-4 Win Over Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Senior Ryan Reid (Sarnia, Ont./East Lambton) was a workhorse on the mound on Thursday as he picked up the biggest win of his career and improved to 1-0 with a 15-4 drubbing of the Division I Eagles of Eastern Michigan. Reid threw nine innings and allowed 13 hits, but scattered single runs in the third, fourth, seventh and ninth innings. He gave up three earned runs, walked three and struck out nine. (Recap)

Cards Clobber Britons In Doubleheader Sweep

ALBION, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State baseball team is beginning to become accustomed to putting double figures on the scoreboard and Tuesday was no exception as SVSU swept a pair of games by the scores of 16-6 and 10-6 at Frank Joranko Field. SVSU used a potent offense in extending their winning streak to five games. Senior Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) got the offense started with his first homer of the season, a two-run shot to right, in the top of the first. (Recap)

Liebrecht Named GLIAC Pitcher of the Week

BAY CITY, Mich. - Junior Steve Liebrecht (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) has been named the GLIAC Pitcher of the Week for his performance in Erie, Pa. against Gannon on Saturday. He threw a complete game three-hit shutout and struck out nine in picking up his first win of the season. (More)

SVSU Takes Three out of Four Over Weekend at Gannon

ERIE, Pa. - The weather outside was frightful but so were the SVSU bats as the Cardinals erupted for a pair of wins on Saturday against Gannon. SVSU won game one, 15-0, and followed with a 9-1 win in the nightcap. Senior shortstop Chris Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) had three singles and a double going 4-for-4 with an RBI in game two. Freshman catcher Ken Hoffman (Midland, Mich.) hit a three-run homer in the third inning, his first of the year. (Recap)

Cards Split Versus Gannon to Open GLIAC Play

ERIE, Pa. - The Saginaw Valley State baseball team got off to a split versus Gannon at Mercyhurst College's baseball field in a frigid start to the GLIAC season. The Cards dropped a 1-0 decision in game one despite a two-hitter by sophomore Scott Schlaff (Warren, Mich./Mott). Schlaff did make a critical error in the fourth inning on a failed pickoff attempt which allowed a runner to score from third base. (Recap)

Cardinals Sweep Univ. of Charleston

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State Cardinals improved to 5-2 on the year with a pair of wins over DII University of Charleston (WV) on Thursday from Terry Park in a twilight twinbill. Cardinals Top Hanover, 3-1

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team battled to a 3-1 win over Hanover (Ind.) on Wednesday (March 2). The Cardinals scored runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take the win. Senior Ryan Reid (Sarnia, Ontario) pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Cardinals. In seven innings pitched Reid struck out six, walked two, allowed two hits and only one run. (Recap)

Cardinals Trump Salem International, 7-6

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team earned a hard fought 7-6 victory over Salem International on Monday (Feb. 28). With the scored tied 6-6 in the ninth inning, the Cardinals scored in the top half of the inning and held on for the victory. Joe Funsch (Clio, Mich.) led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. (Recap)

Cardinals Fall to Florida Gulf Coast

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The SVSU baseball team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday (Feb. 27). The Cardinals fell behind 1-0 in the third inning before tying it in the fourth. FGC scored once more to go up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth. SVSU scored twice and allowed one more run in the seventh to take a 3-3 tie into the final inning. FGC scored in the bottom of the ninth to take the win. Jason Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) went 2-for-4 with a walk for the Cardinals. (Recap)

Cards Split a Pair of Games on Day One


FT. MYERS, Fla. - The SVSU baseball squad worked deep into the night on Saturday in their first action of the 2005 season and the end result was a split of a pair of games from Terry Park. In the first game, SVSU claimed a 6-5 win over St. Vincent (Pa.). Senior Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) collected a triple and single in the game with the triple setting up the game-winning run. He would score on a passed ball for the final run in the bottom of the seventh. (Recap)
