SVSU Knocked Out of GLIAC
Tournament
DETROIT, Mich.– The
Saginaw Valley State baseball team was eliminated from the GLIAC
Tournament on Friday, May 13 when they dropped their game against
Wayne State Warriors by a score of 7-3. Saginaw Valley scored
one run in the bottom of the second inning and didn't score again
until the bottom of eighth when they recorded two more runs. By
that time Wayne State already had done enough damage by tallying
seven runs, enough to give them a 7-3 victory.
The Cards scord their first run in the
second inning when Justin Doughty (Oscoda,
Mich) hit a two-out single that scored Dale Marsden
(Sarnia, Ont./Northern Collegiate), who reached
base on a single to leftfield earlier in the inning. Then in the
top of the third inning the Warriors got to SVSU starter Scott
Roy (Mt. Morris, Mich./E.A. Johnson HS) when
they tallied five hits and got three runs, giving them a 3-1 lead
in the third inning. The Warriors weren't done there though, as
they tallied another run in the top of the fourth, and three more
in the top of the seventh inning, giving them a 7-1 lead. The
Cards battled back in the bottom of the eighth inning as Jason
Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) and
Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.) both
beleted back-to-back doubles, with Burghardt scoring courtesy
of Crawford. Freshman Brandon Fanion (Marysville,
Mich.) then hit a single that brought Crawford around, closing
the Warriors lead to four runs, 7-3. That was as close as the
Cards could get though, as neither team was able to score in the
final inning of play, giving the Warriros the 7-3 decision.
The Cards were lead by Burghardt, who
had two hits and a run scored. Fanion, Crawford and Justin
Doughty (Oscoda, Mich) all recorded a hit and
an RBI to help the cause. Roy suffered the loss on the mound,
going seven innings and surrendering seven earned runs on eleven
hits, while striking out four.
