ROY WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT AND CARDS SPLIT AT MERCYHURST

ERIE, Pa. - The Saginaw Valley State baseball team has had a flair for the dramatic this season and Saturday was no exception. In a twinbill at Mercyhurst, SVSU dropped a 14-inning, 3-2 decision to the Lakers in game one and then behind the arm of freshman Scott Roy (Mt. Morris, Mich.) won game two, 7-1.
SVSU struggled at the plate in game one as six different players collected a hit. Junior Jason Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) reached base three times with two walks and a run scored. The Cardinals got a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth as senior Chris Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) scored on a squeeze bunt by junior Justin Doughty (Oscoda, Mich.). The Lakers added a run in the bottom of the sixth and both teams then moved into extra innings and scored one run apiece in the eleventh. Junior Dale Marsden (Sarnia, Ont.) doubled home Burghardt with two outs to give SVSU a brief 2-1 lead. Mercyhurst tied it up at 2-2 and left bases loaded in the eleventh. The Lakers ended things with a leadoff double in the bottom of the 14th, followed by a sacrifice bunt moving the runner to third with one out. After two intentional walks loaded the bases, Matt Echan singled home David Lough with the winning run. Starter Scott Schlaff (Warren, Mich./Mott) got a no-decision but pitched well going nine innings and allowing one earned run and five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Kori Garman (Goodrich, Mich.) fell to 1-1 pitching the final 2.2 innings and walking four while allowing two hits and one earned run.
Roy made sure that SVSU would end on a high note going all seven innings and allowing four hits and one earned run. Roy had a stretch of over 22 innings without allowing an earned run snapped in the bottom of the third. The Cardinals scored one in the first and added two in the second to build a 3-0 lead off starter Greg Tellex (0-5) who threw 4.2 innings and allowed seven earned runs and seven hits. Freshman catcher Max Bell (Goodrich, Mich.) clubbed his first career home run in the second inning and finished the game with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with three RBI. Freshman left fielder Reed Welker (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's) had a 3-for-3 effort with two runs and two RBI, including two doubles giving him seven this year. Senior Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) went 2-for-3 with his eighth double and was hit by a pitch. Jones took over the team lead with a .370 batting average.
Saginaw Valley (23-9, 11-5 GLIAC) plays two more against Mercyhurst tomorrow with start time scheduled for noon.
