SPLITS WITH HILLSDALE
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -
Saginaw Valley State won three out of four games against Hillsdale
College this weekend and split a pair of games on Sunday. Hillsdale
scored five times in the top of the seventh in game one to break
a 3-3 tie and win 8-3. SVSU scored single runs in the fifth and
sixth innings to tie the game setting up the final inning. Senior
Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) belted
his second home run of the season leading off the fifth and cutting
the lead to 3-2. The Cards would add one unearned run in the sixth
as a dropped popup allowed pinch runner Chris Hanna
(Caledonia, Mich.) to score from second base with two
outs. Starting pitcher Steve Liebrecht (Saginaw,
Mich./Heritage) was saddled with the loss (1-1) going 6.1
innings and allowing four earned runs with eight strikeouts. Jones
and senior Chris Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic
Central) both collected an RBI and five different Cards had
one hit.
SVSU scored in each of the first
four innings and built a 10-6 lead after four innings in winning
11-7. Sophomore Scott Schlaff (Warren, Mich./Mott)
threw a complete game and earned the win (2-1). He allowed four
earned runs and struck out four. Junior Jason Burghardt
(Temperance, Mich./Bedford) reached base five times in
game two, including three walks, a double and a single. He collected
two RBI and scored twice from the leadoff spot. Senior Justin
Hanning (Lake Orion, Mich.) also had two RBI
and a walk. Hanna was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three
RBI, including a three-run double in the third.
