CARDS WIN
THREE OUT OF FOUR WITH A SPLIT ON SUNDAY AGAINST #24 GRAND VALLEY

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. –
The Saginaw Valley State baseball team jumped up the GLIAC standings
this weekend and on Sunday split a doubleheader with visiting
#24 Grand Valley State. The Lakers won game one, 8-3, scoring
four runs in the top of the seventh on Cardinal miscues. In the
nightcap, SVSU scored twice in the bottom of the first and cruised
to a 7-3 win.
SVSU had a balanced attack
in game one as six different players recorded a hit. SVSU carried
a 2-1 lead into the top of the fifth before GVSU scored three
runs to take a 4-2 lead. SVSU scored one in the bottom of the
sixth to cut the lead to 4-3 but could not get any closer. Jason
Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford), Justin
Hanning (Lake Orion, Mich.) and Ken Hoffman
(Midland, Mich.) each had an RBI in game one. Ryan Reid
(Sarnia, Ont.) took the loss (1-1) throwing a complete game and
giving up five earned runs with five strikeouts.
The Cards pounced on the Lakers
early in the second game scoring two runs in the first and four
more in the third to take a 6-0 lead after three innings. Hanning
had an RBI double plating the game's fourth run and Justin
Doughty (Oscoda, Mich.) reached on a fielding error by
shortstop Ryan Lyster scoring two unearned runs. Scott
Schlaff (Warren, Mich./Mott) earned the win in game two
going seven innings and allowing one earned run with four strikeouts.
Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) was 2-for-2 with
an RBI in the game and Chris Norton (Grand Rapids,
Mich./Catholic Central) collected two RBI in the nightcap. SVSU
(18-5, 9-3 GLIAC) will next travel to Northwood for a GLIAC doubleheader
on Wednesday, April 13 beginning at 3:00 pm.
