SIX PLAYERS
HONORED BY GLIAC
BAY CITY, Mich. –
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has
announced their All-GLIAC teams for the 2005 season and six Cardinals
have been selected as representatives. Four players have earned
Second Team All-GLIAC honors and two players have earned Honorable
Mention All-GLIAC honors for their prowess on the diamond.
Senior designated hitter Dan
Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) concluded his two years
at SVSU as a dominant hitter. This season, Jones hit .336 in 40
games and led the GLIAC with 37 walks. He collected 40 hits and
led the team with 13 doubles, which ranked third in the GLIAC.
Jones also ranked third in the league in on-base percentage (.509)
and 13th in slugging percentage (.546). Jones was also great in
the field sporting one error in 195 chances for a .995 fielding
percentage. He collected four homers and 28 RBI this season and
had 13 multi-hit games.
Joining Jones on the Second Team is senior
third baseman Justin Hanning (Lake Orion,
Mich.) who ranked third on the team with a .333 average.
Hanning appeared in 42 games and collected 39 hits, including
10 doubles which ranked second on the team. He registered 24 RBI
including five multi-RBI games. In addition, Hanning batted .409
with runners in scoring position.
Freshman pitcher Scott Roy
(Mt. Morris, Mich.) and sophomore pitcher Scott
Schlaff (Warren, Mich./Mott) round out the Second
Team award winners as each had stellar years on the mound. Roy
won his first five starts and finished 5-3 with a 2.39 ERA in
60.1 innings of work. Roy's ERA ranked fifth in the GLIAC and
he also ranked fourth in the conference allowing a .223 average
to the opponents. He racked up 53 strikeouts and allowed a GLIAC-best
19 runs. Roy allowed six extra-base hits all season and recorded
two shutouts in 11 appearances.
Schlaff had an identical 5-3 record
with a 3.34 ERA in 10 starts for SVSU. Schlaff ranked ninth in
the GLIAC in ERA, ninth in innings pitched (62.0) and fifth in
strikeouts (60). He tied for the team lead with five complete
games and walked 15.
Senior shortstop Chris Norton
(Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) and junior second
baseman Justin Doughty (Oscoda, Mich.)
earned Honorable Mention plaudits forming a solid middle infield.
Norton led the team with 159 at-bats and batted .314 with a team-best
50 hits in 48 games. Norton collected nine doubles and 29 RBI
and also scored 27 runs. Norton had a nine-game hitting streak
during the season which tied for a team-best in 2005. He also
recorded 108 assists and 66 putouts good for a .930 fielding percentage.
Doughty earned a starting nod at
second base and made the most of it with a .308 batting average
in 41 games. Doughty collected 32 hits in 104 at-bats and also
scored 23 runs. In addition, he had four doubles and two homers
with 21 RBI. Doughty had a .447 on-base percentage which ranked
10th in the GLIAC and led the conference being hit by 10 pitches.
He batted .346 against lefties and tallied a .957 fielding percentage
in 138 chances.
