SVSU
TAKES THREE OUT OF FOUR OVER WEEKEND AT GANNON
ERIE, Pa. - The weather outside
was frightful but so were the SVSU bats as the Cardinals erupted
for a pair of wins on Saturday against Gannon. SVSU won game one,
15-0, and followed with a 9-1 win in the nightcap.
Junior Steve Liebrecht (Saginaw,
Mich./Heritage) made his second start of the season and turned
in a gem. He improved to 1-0 on the year throwing a complete-game
three-hit shutout. Liebrecht struck out nine and allowed no walks.
The offense gave him plenty of support early scoring nine runs
through two innings. The Cards had a seven-run second inning and
cruised to the win. SVSU had seven extra-base hits in game one
as seniors Justin Hanning (Lake Orion, Mich.)
and Mike Crawford (Lake Orion, Mich.)
each hit a homer, their first of the year. Hanning was 3-for-5
with three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Danny Patterson
(Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) went 3-for-5 with
two RBI and two runs scored. SVSU pounded out 20 hits and scored
a season-high 15 runs.
SVSU did more of the same in game
two after gaining an 8-1 lead after scoring eight times in the
third inning. Junior Elijah Martin (Imlay
City, Mich.) improved to 2-0 going the distance and allowing
three hits and no earned runs. He struck out four and induced
12 groundball outs. Hanning was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a
RBI. Senior Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.)
went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Senior shortstop Chris
Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central)
had three singles and a double going 4-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman
catcher Ken Hoffman (Midland, Mich.)
hit a three-run homer in the third inning, his first of the year.
Saginaw Valley State (7-2, 3-1 GLIAC)
is scheduled to play their home opener on Wednesday, March 30
against Aquinas at 1:00 pm.
