CARDS OPEN SEASON
WITH SPLIT ON DAY ONE IN FORT MYERS
FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Saginaw
Valley State baseball squad worked deep into the night on Saturday
in their first action of the 2005 season and the end result was
a split of a pair of games from Terry Park. In the first game,
SVSU claimed a 6-5 win over St. Vincent (Pa.). After a hour and
a half delay, the Cards sent freshman Scott Roy
(Mt. Morris, Mich./E.A. Johnson) to the mound. He got
a no-decision and threw four innings with five strikeouts in his
collegiate debut. The win went to sophomore Scott Schlaff
(Warren, Mich./Mott) who allowed a double in the seventh
inning, but came back to record the final outs in the top half
of the inning. Senior Mike Crawford (Lake
Orion, Mich.) collected a triple and single in the game with
the triple setting up the game-winning run. He would score on
a passed ball for the final tally in the bottom of the seventh.
In the nightcap, SVSU dropped a
15-7 decision to Concordia-St. Paul. Junior Elijah Martin
(Imlay City, Mich.) took the loss after throwing two
scoreless innings to begin the game. Junior Jason Burghardt
(Temperance, Mich./Bedford) collected two hits and freshman
Brandon Fanion (Marysville, Mich.) hit
the first pitch of his collegiate career for a three-run homer.
Senior Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.)
smacked two doubles and Crawford also belted two singles.
