11-RUN
SECOND INNING PROPELS SVSU TO 20-6 WIN OVER CALVIN
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.
- The Saginaw Valley State baseball team scored more than 20 runs
for the second time this season and erupted for 11 runs in the
second inning for a 20-6 win against Calvin College on Tuesday
from the SVSU Baseball Field.
Senior outfielder Joe Funsch
(Clio, Mich.) had a monster day collecting his first
career grand slam in the second inning and driving in a career-high
seven runs. Funsch had a two-run single the first time up in the
second inning and later in the inning blasted his first home run
over the wall in right center giving him six RBI in the inning.
The Cards had several hitting heroes including senior Chris
Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central)
who was 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs. Redshirt freshman
catcher Ken Hoffman (Midland, Mich.)
hit his third homer in the second inning, a three-run blast to
left center, which gave SVSU a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Danny
Patterson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central)
added a two-run single in the four-run sixth inning in his lone
at-bat. Sophomore Chris Hanna (Caledonia,
Mich.) smacked his first home run of 2005 in the eighth inning
to give the Cards their 20th run.
Junior Aaron Dorgan
(Jackson, Mich.) threw five innings and earned the win
(3-0). He threw 64 pitches (39 strikes) and allowed three hits
and two earned runs while fanning four Knights. Carey
Pohlman (Spring Lake, Mich.) and Kori
Garman (Goodrich, Mich.) threw the final three
innings and allowed two hits and no runs. Garman threw the eighth
and ninth innings and struck out two.
Saginaw Valley (26-9) continues
a hectic week with a key GLIAC doubleheader tomorrow at home against
first-place Wayne State. First pitch is slated for 2:00 pm.
