CARDS CLOBBER BRITONS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

ALBION, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State baseball team is beginning to become accustomed to putting double figures on the scoreboard and Tuesday was no exception as SVSU swept a pair of games by the scores of 16-6 and 10-6 at Frank Joranko Field. SVSU used a potent offense in extending their winning streak to five games. Senior Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.) got the offense started with his first homer of the season, a two-run shot to right, in the top of the first. The Cards added three more runs in the second as Jones tacked on another RBI on a fielder's choice and junior Dale Marsden (Sarnia, Ont.) drove in the fifth run on a sacrifice fly to center. In all, SVSU scored runs in the first five innings including a six-run fourth inning. Senior third baseman Justin Hanning (Lake Orion, Mich.) continued his torrid pace with a two-run double to left and Marsden cranked his fifth homer of the season, a two-run blast over the right field wall to highlight the scoring. Hanning was 3-for-3 with a season-high four RBI and two runs scored. Jones was 2-for-4 with four RBI and Marsden collected three RBI.
Junior Kyle Lepplemeier (Edgerton, Ohio) improved to 2-0 going five innings, but was shaky at times allowing eight hits and five earned runs. Senior Jesse Thompson (Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) relieved Lepplemeier and threw the final two innings allowing no hits.
SVSU pounded out 13 hits in game two and built a 5-0 lead after two innings. Jones doubled to left scoring junior Jason Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) and Marsden followed with a triple to make it 2-0. Freshman Brandon Fanion (Marysville, Mich.) doubled to right scoring Marsden for a three-run first inning. Albion responded with a pair of three-run innings in the fourth and fifth to cut the lead to 7-6. Mike Gough had a two-run single in the fourth and David Seales hit a three-run homer in the fifth to key the potential comeback. SVSU halted any comebacks with three runs in the top of the seventh. Junior Justin Doughty (Oscoda, Mich.) scored on a passed ball after reaching on a single and advancing to third on a Reed Welker (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's) double. Burghardt singled home Welker to make it 9-7 and senior Chris Norton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) singled home Hanning for a three-run cushion.
Hanning collected two hits including his fifth double and two RBI. Norton was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Aaron Dorgan (Jackson, Mich.) picked up the win (1-0) starting for 4.1 innings despite walking two and allowing five earned runs. Sophomore Jeff Schulz (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) threw 1.2 innings in relief and allowed one earned run. SVSU (9-2) will travel to Eastern Michigan for a single game on Thursday with a first pitch scheduled for 3:00 pm.
