Fall to Florida Gulf Coast
FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Saginaw
Valley State University baseball team dropped a tough 4-3 decision
to host Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday (Feb. 27). The Cardinals
fell behind 1-0 in the third inning before tying it in the fourth.
FGC scored once more to go up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
SVSU scored twice and allowed one more run in the seventh to take
a 3-3 tie into the final inning. FGC scored in the bottom of the
ninth to take the win.
Junior Steve Liebrecht (Saginaw,
Mich./Heritage) took the loss for SVSU, pitching eight innings,
striking out nine, while allowing three runs on seven hits and
three walks. Sophomore Jeff Schulz (Livonia,
Mich./Catholic Central) pitched the ninth and allowed two
hits and the winning run without recording an out.
Junior Jason Burghardt (Temperance,
Mich./Bedford) went 2-for-4 with a walk for the Cardinals.
Senior Dan Jones (Gladstone, Mich.)
went 1-for-4 with a walk and one RBI, while junior Dale
Marsden (Sarnia, Ontario) went 1-for-4 with
a double, a walk and a run scored. Sophomore Danny Patterson
(Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) went
2-for-5 with one RBI, while senior Chris Norton (Grand
Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) went 1-for-3 with a double
and a run scored. Senior Joe Funsch (Clio,
Mich.) managed an RBI, while Brandon Fanion (Marysville,
Mich.) recorded a walk and a run scored.
The Cardinals fall to 1-2 on the
season, while Schulz falls to 0-1.
