Cardinals Sweep Doubleheader From
Edinboro
BRADENTON, Fla. – Stellar
performances from the starting pitching staff led Saginaw Valley
State to a doubleheader sweep of Edinboro University, Saturday,
(Mar. 8) at Academy Park in Bradenton, Fla. The Cardinals shutout
the Fighting Scots, 8-0 in game one, while winning 10-7 in the
day’s finale.
Senior Scott Corby (London,
Ontario) silenced the Fighting Scots, throwing his third
career complete-game shutout. Corby surrendered two hits, one
in both the first and sixth innings and at one point sent down
16 hitters in a row. Corby finished with four strike outs and
two walks in his second win of the season.
A six-run fifth inning sparked SVSU, as
the Cardinals collected three hits and five walks off Edinboro
starter Adam Bell. Mike Crawford (Lake Orion,
Mich.) highlighted the inning with a single that scored two
runs. Crawford finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. Jason
Burghardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) and
Jeff O’Loughlin (Bay City, Mich./Western
HS) each singled and walked for the birds.
In game two, senior Mark Debo
(Bay City, Mich./John Glenn HS) moved to 2-0 on the season,
tossing 6.1 innings in the victory. Debo, gave up two runs on
ten hits and no walks. Debo fanned three, all of which came in
the second inning. SVSU opened the scoring in the first inning
as the Cardinals’ first two hitters Sean Odamura
(Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park HS) and Burghardt led
off the game with walks. Odamura came around to score on an Edinboro
fielding error, giving SVSU a 1-0 lead.
The Redbirds put up three more runs in
each of the third and fourth frames to break open the game. In
the third, Crawford smacked an RBI triple, while Kurt
Neveau (Bay City, Mich./Central HS) picked up
an RBI double. Neveau finished with two hits and a pair of RBI
in the game. Justin Hanning’s (Lake
Orion, Mich.) single in the fourth scored two more runs as
the Cardinals would go on to mount a 10-2 lead. Things got sticky
in the seventh, but closer Joe Kramer (Linden,
Mich.) came to earn his second save of the season.
The win, SVSU’s third in a row,
was head coach Walt Head’s 585. Head now needs 15 more to
reach the 600-win plateau.
